MLS and FC Dallas are finally back.
After a nearly two-month-long pause for the FIFA World Cup, FC Dallas returns to league play on Wednesday with the continuation of their epic nine-game summer road trip when they take on the Portland Timbers.
The timing couldn’t be more interesting. The Timbers will have already played their biggest rivals, Seattle, where they dominated them in a 5-1 blowout at Lumen Field for interim manager Jack Cassidy’s first match.
The good news here? Dallas had some extra time to rest, regroup (especially after their rusty looking friendly last Wednesday against Orlando) and prepare for a difficult road environment. The bad news? Providence Park remains one of the toughest road environments in MLS.
Tactic Style & Shape:
The coaching change is the biggest wildcard here for Portland. Some teams get an immediate “new coach bump” and come out flying. Others spend weeks figuring out roles and responsibilities. Portland’s win against Seattle gave us a little more indication as to where this Timbers squad is at in that process.
Under their previous setup, Portland wanted to attack quickly and play vertically through their talented attacking players. They’re at their best when they can create transitional opportunities, overload wide areas, and get runners flying into the box.

- Defensive shape - Defensively, however, consistency has been an issue throughout the season. The Timbers are vulnerable to the counter attack, which Dallas will want to expose.
Key Player: Antony
While you could make the argument for their leading scorer Kevin Kelsey to be the key guy to watch out for (and you wouldn’t be wrong), I still lean toward the Brazilian winger. When he is on his game, he is still one of the more underrated attackers in MLS. His two goals this season are a low mark, but the new manager bump could help change that tide.
Key Matchup: Kevin Kelsey vs Osaze Urhoghide
Kelsey added two more goals to his tally on Thursday night in Seattle, showing how dangerous he can be when he gets in and around the penalty box. His eight goals on the season leads the way for the Timbers. Urhoghide has been going up against some of the best attackers this season, so this will be another battle that will determine whether or not Dallas can come away with points again on the road.

All-time hosting FC Dallas: Dallas has struggled in Portland during the regular season, going 1-8-6, with the last win coming in the 2016 season. They did pick up a draw in their last road trip in September 2025.
Current form: Going into the World Cup break, the Timbers had lost three out of their last five games, going 1-3-1 in the month of May. Their lone win came at home in a blowout win over Sporting Kansas City. Coming out of the break, the Timbers down Seattle 5-1.
Where they're at in the standings: Following their win over Seattle on Thursday, the Timbers now sit in 11th place with 17 points.
Three keys for FC Dallas
- Expect the Unexpected: This isn’t the Portland Timbers we’ve seen before under Phil Neville. Sure, the sum of the parts is mostly the same, but you have to imagine there are some new ideas that Cassidy wants to instill in this group like he was doing with the Timber’s second team. Dallas needs to prepare to adjust quickly if Portland shows something new.
- Silence the Crowd Early: One of the best things Dallas was doing in May when their road trip began was silencing the crowds in San Jose and Colorado early in the first half. Providence Park is a tougher environment than PayPal Park or Dicks Sporting Goods Park are combined. Dallas needs to find ways to frustrate the Timbers early and this will go a long way in pulling the crowd out of this one the longer the match goes on.
- Win the Transition Battle: We know Portland wants to stretch defenses with their speed up front. But, so does Dallas. If guys like Sam Sarver can get in behind the Timbers’ defense and force the Timbers’ defense to be on their backheels.
