MLS roster terms, explained
Senior roster (spots 1 to 20)
Players whose salaries count against the salary cap. Teams can carry 18 to 20.
Supplemental roster (spots 21 to 30)
Mostly Homegrowns, Generation adidas players and young players on lower salaries. They don't count against the cap.
Supplemental Spot 31
An extra roster spot beyond the usual 30. FC Dallas uses it for Enzo Newman, who is out on loan.
Designated Player (DP)
A player whose salary is mostly paid outside the cap. Under the U22 model, a team can have two.
U22 Initiative
Young signings (22 or younger when acquired) who carry a reduced cap charge. Under the U22 model, a team can have up to four.
TAM player
A player whose cap charge sits above the maximum budget charge ($803,125 in 2026) and is bought down with Targeted Allocation Money.
Homegrown
A player signed straight out of the club's own academy.
Generation adidas
A league-funded young player program. These players sit on the supplemental roster.
International slot
A roster spot required for players who aren't U.S. domestic players under MLS rules. Clubs can trade for more.
