One final road trip before Decision Day.
FC Dallas heads to Kansas City on Saturday afternoon for its final away match of the 2026 regular season, with a return to Toyota Stadium against Colorado on November 7 waiting to close out the schedule.
Sporting KC is already eliminated from playoff contention, as they are in a neck-and-neck battle with CF Montreal for the league’s Wooden Spoon race for the worst record in the regular season.
Both teams are coming off losses in the midweek, with Dallas losing at home to Columbus and Sporting coughing up a lead on the road to eventually lose 3-1 at Minnesota.
The first meeting between these teams in September was a seven-goal thriller at Toyota Stadium. Dallas eventually emerged with a 4-3 victory, but Kansas City repeatedly found ways to make things uncomfortable before FCD secured all three points.
Let’s dive in.
Tactic Style & Shape:
Sporting KC has undergone significant changes during Raphael Wicky’s first season in charge.
After a difficult opening half of the campaign, Kansas City invested heavily during the summer transfer window, bringing in seven players as the club attempted to reshape its roster.
Among the additions were André Luiz, Owen Wolff, Emir Karić, Moisés Mosquera and Or Blorian, giving Wicky new options across several areas of the field.
The results have been inconsistent, but the attacking approach has become more direct, largely going through Luiz.

The problem has been maintaining defensive stability.
Sporting has struggled to protect the spaces between its midfield and back line, particularly when opponents move possession quickly through central areas.
That has been especially evident during the club’s recent winless run, where they have given up 15 goals in their last five matches.
Key Player: André Luiz
Sporting KC is now pretty much all André Luiz.
Since joining the team, he has seven goals and three assists in 11 matches. The guy has been a machine and worth every penny that Sporting paid to get him. His impact has been particularly impressive considering how little time he’s had to settle into a new team and league.

Key Matchup: Petar Musa vs SKC’s center backs
After Wednesday’s shutout against Columbus, Dallas needs to get its leading scorer involved again.
Sporting has relied on several combinations at center back, including young defenders Jansen Miller and Wyatt Meyer. That lack of continuity has created problems, particularly when opponents force the defensive line to make quick decisions.
And that’s exactly where Musa can be dangerous. Get him involved early and force their defensive unit to figure out how to defend him on the fly. We know what Musa is capable of when he gets the ball in good positions.

Three keys for FC Dallas
- Don’t let Andre Luiz find space: Aside from their bad results, the one shining player for SKC has been newcomer Andre Luiz. He’s clearly been worth the cash and has been a constant attacking threat since joining the team in the summer. Dallas needs to prevent him from repeatedly receiving possession with room to run.
- Put their defense under pressure: Sporting has given up 80 goals this season. Yeah, 80. They’ve given up a whopping three goals per game in their last five matches. Yes, three goals. Per game. Dallas needs to move the ball quickly through the midfield and keep Musa active throughout this one. Force them to react and not get organized.
- Treat this like a playoff tune-up: After Wednesday’s loss to Columbus, Dallas needs to find a way to not allow this one to be a trap game. Instead, they need to use this one as a tune-up for the upcoming playoffs. This is an opportunity to get closer to locking in a home playoff series, too. In other words, make this one count.
