Before the 2025 season, FC Dallas spent big on a defender for what felt like the first time in club history. With that big purchase came Osaze Urhoghide. Eighteen months later, the receipt looks cheap.
Urhoghide has started 27 matches at the heart of Eric Quill’s three-man back line. He’s scored two goals, including a match-winner against LAFC. Former FC Dallas midfielder and current Apple TV analyst Dax McCarty has called him one of the league’s most underrated defenders.
We‘d go one further. Let’s dive in.

The anchor of a system built to suffer
Quill’s Dallas doesn’t dominate the ball. It wins duels, breaks up passes and dares you to beat it in the air. As a team, Dallas has led MLS in interceptions per 90 and sits in the top three in aerial duels. That profile starts in the middle of the back three with Urhoghide.
Despite the heavy rotation of players in the back, it hasn’t mattered who is lined up on either side of him. He’s remained a constant in the middle.

He wins the big moments at both ends
The September 27 win over LAFC was 1-0, and that lone goal was his. On the other end, Dallas held a conference rival scoreless. You could say that was the season in one night for Urhoghide. Dallas has made a habit of grinding out 1-0 wins down the stretch, including the playoff-clinching win over Seattle, and those don’t happen without a center back who wins every second ball.
He’s been doing it all season, too.
