FC Dallas kicks off the busiest month of 2026 this weekend when they head back to the West Coast to take on fellow MLS original LA Galaxy.
After restarting the season following the World Cup break, Dallas had a disappointing week on the road with a 2-2 draw in Portland last Wednesday, before dropping all three points in a 1-0 loss at San Diego FC.
This weekend, they battle the LA Galaxy, a team they’ve already met this season. The two sides met back in Frisco earlier this season, playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw in a match that saw both teams create plenty of chances but neither able to find a late winner.
The Galaxy come into the weekend searching for momentum of their own after returning from the World Cup break with losses against LAFC and St. Louis CITY SC, before a 1-1 draw over the weekend against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Both teams need a positive result and neither are exactly brimming with confidence at the moment. Let’s dive into the Galaxy to see how FC Dallas can leave LA with three points.
Tactic Style & Shape:
Gregg Vanney’s squad still wants to maintain possession as much as possible to dictate the tempo of the match, especially through the midfield. Similar to what Dallas saw in San Diego last weekend, LA will look to overload the wings with their fullbacks getting up into space to isolate defenders.
- Offensive tendencies - Along with their possession-oriented attack, LA will try to pull defenders out of position with quick passes in an effort to spring someone free inside the penalty area.
- Defensive shape - Defensively, the Galaxy have made strides this season from their previous years where they were very leaky in their defensive third. But they still have issues when possession breaks down. LA is vulnerable in transition, especially when players are pushed up. This will be an area where Dallas will look to spring players forward on the counter.
Key Player: Marco Reus
Even at this stage in his career, Marco Reus remains the heartbeat of the Galaxy attack.
He has a knack for drifting into space between the midfield and the backline, where he can dictate the tempo, slip runners through on goal, or create chances with one clever touch.
If Dallas is going to leave LA with points, limiting Reus’ influence has to be near the top of the priority list.
Key Matchup: Nolan Norris vs Joseph Paintsil
Given the way LA likes to go wide with their attackers, Paintsil is the key guy in finding space and exposing defenses, especially now that Gabriel Pec has departed to Brazil and Joao Klauss is still on the injury list.
Norris has been excellent this season, but he is one yellow card away from a suspension. Don’t be shocked if Painstil looks to bait Norris into an early foul that could cost him down the road.

All-time hosting FC Dallas: LA has largely dominated Dallas in their regular season series, going 9-28-6 in all-time regular season meetings. Dallas’ last win at LA came back at the end of the 2023 season.
Current form: LA has gone winless in their last three games since the World Cup break ended, with their last win coming in late May against Seattle.
Where they're at in the standings: LA sits outside the playoff line at the moment in the Western Conference in 11th place. They’re five points back of FC Dallas with 21.
Three keys for FC Dallas
- Be Better on the Ball: The numbers from San Diego can’t happen again. When the schedule coming up the way it is, Dallas really cannot afford to chase games the way they did last weekend. Dallas doesn’t need to dominate possession in this game, but they do need to have the ball enough to create some decent chances and not be defending for 70-plus minutes.
- Punish the space being the fullbacks: As long as Dallas is better on the ball this weekend with their build up, if they can capitalize on those transition moments, they’ll make LA pay for overcommitting numbers forward.
- Match LA’s midfield quality: LA will want to control things in the middle of the field. Dallas has to stay more compact, win second balls, and avoid getting pulled out of shape in chasing possession.
