Our 2024 FC Dallas player recaps wrap up today with a look at defender Marco Farfan.
Like a few other key players for FC Dallas, Farfan began the year on the injury list. But after a few weeks of not playing, he returned to the field and remained a consistent starter for the remainder of the year.
Stat breakdown
For a lot of the regular starters, I have been displaying their 2024 stats against their 2023 stats. Farfan gets a slightly different treatment since he had minutes as a fullback as well as a center back in 2024. It is a bit staggering how different these charts are for him.
I still maintain that Farfan is indeed one of the club’s best passers and as a fullback, that is clear. As a center back, that percentage of passes complete does drop pretty heavily, though on the other side he does have a staggering percentage of progressive passes received and progressive carries.
His passing numbers were stellar. He completed 87% of his passes, with the majority of them in the short range. Though we shouldn’t sleep on his long range passing, which was saw a 62% completion percentage. He had one assist and five key passes.
Still, Farfan is one of the club’s better defenders. In either position, he does well to tackle dribblers. He ended the season with 49 tackles, 18 blocks, 22 interceptions, and 41 clearances.
Highlight
When you are a defender who can score, it helps with the highlight reels at the end of the year. Farfan scores this big one against rivals Austin to help clinch the Copa Tejas in 2024.
What should we expect from him in 2025?
Now that we know it is Eric Quill in charge, I have a gut feeling he will return to his natural left back position in 2025. As good as he looked at times as a center back this past year, he’s far more comfortable on the left side, chasing down attackers, winning the ball and pushing it forward. He was limited as a passer when he was a center back in the club’s 3-4-3 this season.
Final thoughts
When looking back on the season, Farfan always stood out to me as one of the more reliable players on the roster. He’s not going to make a ton of headlines or wow you with a ton of goals or assists. But he is going to get in and do a lot of the little things that go unnoticed.
The team notably struggled early in the season when he was hurt and got notably better when he returned. I think we’ll get more of the same out of him in 2025 under Quill as the defense gets retooled.
