The Big D Power Index (BPI) is Big D Soccer’s data-driven MLS power rankings, updated automatically after each matchday. Unlike a standings table, BPI doesn’t just reward teams for winning, it measures how well they’re actually playing using expected goals (xG), goals added (g+), and goal differential from American Soccer Analysis. The result is a more honest picture of which MLS clubs are built to last and which are living on borrowed time in the regular season.
Big D Power Index
The Big D Power Index (BPI) is a composite score built from four live data sources. Everything updates automatically after each matchday — no manual inputs.
BPI scores are normalized 0–100 each matchday. League average = 50.
How the Big D Power Index Works
Standard MLS standings tell you who has the most points. The Big D Power Index tells you who deserves them.
BPO combines five data sources into a single composite score, updated live after each matchday.
Expected Goal Differential (xGD) carries the most weight at 38%. xGD measures the quality of chances a team creates versus the quality of chances they allow. It’s the backbone of the BPI formula.
Points Per Game (22%) reflects actual results, because results do still matter. But by weighting it below xGG, BPI surfaces teams that are performing better than their points suggest and flags teams that are running hot.
Goal Differential Per Game (20%) adds another layer of result-based context. Teams with strong GD tend to be genuinely good. Teams papering over a weak GD with narrow wins are harder to sustain.
Goals Added (g+) at 18% is the most granular factor of the BPI. Sourced from ASA, g+ measures how every on-ball action from passing, shooting, dribbling, receiving, and pressing can shift a team’s probability of scoring. It rewards teams playing good soccer even when the results haven’t fully caught up.
Form Trend (2%) is a minor tiebreaker pulled from the league’s official standings. We deliberately keep this weight low, a single bad result shouldn’t bury a team that has been excellent all season.
FC Dallas Focus
Because FC Dallas is our main focus on Big D Soccer, the BPI covers all 30 MLS clubs, but Dallas always gets the spotlight treatment here. The spotlight shows the club’s rankings in both the Western Conference and overall MLS tab. The Texas Derby Tracker puts Dallas, Houston and Austin side-by-side every matchday, because rivalry context matters.
Data Sources
xG and G+ data comes from American Soccer Analysis (ASA), the gold standard of MLS analytics. Standings data comes directly from MLS’s official API. Both sources update automatically with no manual inputs or editorial thumb on the scale.
