FC Dallas vs Vancouver Whitecaps: Highlights, Stats and Quote Sheet

All the little details from Sunday’s big win in Vancouver.

FC Dallas picks up three massive points on the road Sunday night in Canada as they downed the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the game…I thought it was a great game, from our side. Not just one of the most important games and victories in the year but the whole performance was very correct and complete. The discipline, the organization, the response that the players have toward the game plan—it was excellent and I’m very proud to see these guys get those three points against a good side. It was a very, very good performance.

On recent road performances…We have increased our commitment and responsibility with the defensive part of the game. And going on the road where teams have the initiative and obviously they all look for their goals taking advantage of their plays, you need to be extra disciplined there and I thought this year we have increased that part and that makes me proud but also the change of the models during the year and the flexibility has helped us as well—just having different ways of finding the points and the boys are doing a great job on that.

On Set Plays…Especially the way this group has worked on the set plays with Josema Bazan and Marco Ferruzzi—they are doing a terrific job on preparing all those actions with a lot of responsibility. And today the game rewarded them both—the coaches and the players. Those set plays are very critical the way you want to get points. Also, sometimes they play in open play or sometimes it’s a foul, or a corner or a throw-win, and avoiding them because today we played against one of the best teams in the league on set plays and we did well.

Being top of the table…We have an important game in Portland but today the points were massive for us. Obviously, happy to be back in first place but the journey is longer still. On subbing an extra defender on…Maynor [Figueroa] has the experience and discipline tactically—and that model of three at the back he knows well, and he knows what it takes to get points at that stage of the game. For us it was a big help because I thought our defensive line was getting exposed in the last 15 minutes because Vancouver was throwing bodies in there. With Figueroa we solved that problem.

What it says about the team to concede and fight back to win…It says that the boys are a good team. They are a very, very good team.

On Alphonso Davies…Amazing player. Amazing player…

FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges

General thoughts…I thought we played well. We had a game plan coming in to be tight, be defensively strong and create chances off set plays, like we did, and I thought we did it perfectly.

On his goal…It’s a play that we work on sometimes. Normally I’m the guy trying to flick it to the back post, but it was kind of a quick play where we were all getting up into the box. It’s something that we worked on a little bit, to have him go close and try to flick it to the back post and it worked perfectly. Can’t draw it up any better than that.

On bringing on Maynor Figueroa to help defensively... It helped a lot. Kei [Kamara] is obviously very strong in the air and it seemed like they were trying to send a lot of aerial balls to that side of the field. Bringing Maynor on to contest with him and help us solidify a bit towards the end of the game was very helpful.

On Vancouver’s attack…They have some quick guys and then they play off of Kamara very well. It’s very difficult because he’s one of the best in the league in the air and at holding the ball up. I thought we fought with him very well today and stifled them.

On being back on top of the West…A great weekend for us getting three points and having those results go our way. It’s important to take this momentum into next week and try to get points in Portland, and then we’re at home where we need to get three more points and keep moving.

FC Dallas forward Maxi Urruti

General thoughts on the match…We played well. We needed to win to demonstrate we are fighting to be on top. It was an important game and now we move forward.

What are the team’s hope after tonight? We have the same objective we had at the beginning of the year: to fight to get as high up in the conference and to win the MLS Cup.

How did Vancouver play tonight? They played a great match, we knew how to face them. At the end, it was very important for us to score and get the win.

FC Dallas midfielder Santiago Mosquera

Thoughts on tonight’s match…A complicated game. We knew it was going to be a difficult match. During the week, we practiced set pieces because we knew that it was their weakness and we took advantage of it. We had a lot of control and thank God we were able to score with the set pieces we practiced.

Thoughts on the team’s performance tonight…It’s important to score. Everyone’s work on the field tonight was important. It’s important that we continue to fight. These three points were very important to put us on top and that what makes us happy.

Team’s objective after tonight…We continue to have the same objectives: to score and to see how far we get. We have a difficult opponent next week, so now we need to win there and continue to work hard.
