FC Dallas continues its nine-game road trip, with another game on the West Coast this weekend with its second-ever trip to face San Diego FC. The first trip in 2025? Well, Dallas would probably prefer to not dwell on that 5-0 defeat.
Things do appear a little different this time around. Dallas isn’t entering this match with a slew of injuries like they were last season, while San Diego is a team that has struggled to regain its form that helped them be one of the top teams in MLS during their expansion run. They’re coming off a 1-0 loss against Colorado on Wednesday night.
That doesn’t mean this is suddenly an easy road game, however. Dallas struggled to put away San Diego at home earlier this season, in a wild 3-3 draw. San Diego is still a team that possesses plenty of attacking talent and will be desperate to end their current skid.
Tactic Style & Shape:
Even during their recent struggles in 2026, San Diego hasn’t strayed too far from its identity under Mikey Varas. They want to play with the ball, move opponents around with possession, and create chances through intelligent movement from their attacking players.
- Offensive tendencies - In a way, they do mirror what Dallas does offensively. Their attack is built around quick combinations and solid finishing in and around the penalty box. Unlike Dallas, they’ll possess the ball for large portions of the game as they patiently build through the midfield.
- Defensive shape - On the other end of the ball, San Diego can be exposed in transition when numbers get committed forward. Teams that have found success against them have been disciplined defensively and clinical when counter-attacking opportunities present themselves.
Key Player: Anders Dreyer
Everything in San Diego’s attack will still flow through Dreyer. The Danish attacker is still one of the best creative players in MLS, with six goals and nine assists on the season (he currently tops in MLS in assists). He has the ability to beat defenders off the dribble, create chances for his teammates, and find the back of the net himself.
Key Matchup: Marcus Ingvartsen vs Osaze Urhoghide
Yeah, this will probably be a common theme throughout this road trip. FCD’s best defender going up against the other side’s best attacking player. While the focus will largely be on what Dreyer does with the ball, it will be locking down Ingvartsen in and around the penalty box that will be key in this game. Ingvartsen has quietly been one of the more consistent attackers in MLS, scoring 11 goals this season (just two off of Petar Musa’s pace in the Golden Boot race).

Quick Notes:
All-time hosting FC Dallas: The history against FC Dallas is fairly short, given that San Diego was an expansion team in 2025. The lone meeting for Dallas at SnapDragon Stadium was not a memorable one, as they lost 5-0.
Current form: Going back to before the World Cup break, and including Wednesday night, San Diego has one win in their last 13 games.
Where they're at in the standings: San Diego currently sits in 13th place, on 17 points, a far cry from where they were at this point in their expansion season.
Three keys for FC Dallas
- Stay Compact Defensively: We know from experience that when San Diego is at its best, they pull teams out of shape with movement in and around the penalty box. Dallas has to stay disciplined defensively and force the home side into less dangerous areas as well as force turnovers.
- Attack Quickly in Transition: Dallas will get their moments in this one, but they have to make the most of them when they come, too. San Diego will over commit at times in possession, which will open the door up for quick transitions like we saw in Portland on Wednesday. Dallas has the speed and talent to make San Diego’s defense pay for overcommitting.
- Take Advantage of Their Lack of Confidence: When a team like San Diego has only one win in their last 12 or 13 games, it isn’t an accident. Injuries have been there. Lack of confidence has been there for ages. If Dallas can score first and put San Diego under pressure, there’s a chance their frustration can creep in and affect the home side. After all, San Diego is prone to a dumb foul that leads to a red card pretty often this season.
