FC Dallas had an opportunity to take another step toward securing a home playoff game on Wednesday night. Instead, a 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew at Toyota Stadium left head coach Eric Quill searching for answers and hoping the setback serves as a timely reminder of what has made his team successful this season.

After a strong opening stretch, Dallas conceded against the run of play and struggled to regain control against a Columbus side fighting to keep its postseason hopes alive. For Quill, the disappointment wasn’t simply the result, but how his team didn’t respond to adversity unlike what we’ve seen out of them for the last few months.

“What was different tonight was that we didn’t respond with the resilience we’ve shown all year,” Quill said. “We became disorganized. We wanted to keep pressing, but we weren’t doing it together.”

Dallas had dictated the tempo during the opening 17 minutes, but a promising high press quickly turned into a Columbus counterattack that produced the game’s opening goal from Columbus’ Gonzalo Tapia. Quill felt his side had done the difficult work of winning possession high up the field, only to lose its defensive structure when the play broke down.

“We were a little naive, in my opinion,” Quill explained. “It was a beautiful press. We executed it, won the ball and had their goalkeeper on the ground near the byline. But he was able to start a jailbreak counterattack, and we weren’t tactically in the right positions to deal with the cross.”

That moment changed the complexion of the match. Columbus, a possession-oriented side comfortable controlling the ball, began dictating the rhythm and forcing Dallas into increasingly disconnected defensive movements.

Quill noted that his team’s pressing became fragmented, with some players pushing forward while others remained deeper. Against a technical Columbus backline, those gaps made it difficult for Dallas to disrupt the visitors’ possession.

The frustration only grew when Dallas had a potential goal disallowed following a VAR review. Quill acknowledged that the offside decision might have been correct, but believed the lengthy interruption and eventual ruling further deflated his team.

“I was excited because I thought that goal was going to bring us back into the game, and having it called back deflated us even more,” Quill said. “It felt like we were getting punched.”

Still, Quill wasn’t interested in using the officiating decision as an excuse for the overall performance.

A needed reality check
