Well, so much for easing back into life at Toyota Stadium.
After finally returning home last weekend and producing a wild 4-3 win over Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas immediately hits the road again Wednesday night for a trip north to Allianza Field and a rematch with Minnesota United.
Dallas doesn’t need much reminding of what happened the first time around against the Loons. Minnesota came into Frisco and left with a 1-0 victory, snapping what had been a nice unbeaten run for FCD at the time. Anthony Markanich provided the only goal of the night, as Minnesota frustrated Dallas and controlled large stretches of the match.
Minnesota is looking to break out of a rut that they’ve been in this summer, against a team they’ve had plenty of success against over the years at home.
Let’s dive into what Dallas can do to get their revenge against Minnesota and keep pace for a top playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Tactic Style & Shape:
Under Cameron Knowles, Minnesota has been very adaptable in 2026. Dallas saw that in the first meeting back in the spring when the Loons stole three points from Dallas in Frisco.
Minnesota doesn’t need to dominate possession to control a match. They’re comfortable with defending in the mid-to-low block, absorbing pressure and then attacking quickly once they force a turnover.
- Offensive tendencies - They seem to thrive on the counter attack. They turn turnovers into chances by sending runners into attacking channels, which limits how quickly a team can defend and reset their shape against their speed.
- Defensive shape - With five in the back, they’ll defend a lot. They’ll scrap for second balls and slow the pace of the game down. Dallas will want to use film from both the Orlando and Portland games, where the Loons gave up a combined eight goals to see how to break them down.
Key Player: Joaquín Pereyra
While it could be easy to target their leading scorer Kelvin Yeboah, I’m going with their main assist maker in Pereyra.
Pereyra gives Minnesota the creative presences that connects its midfield to the attacking line with Yeboah. He does well to drift into pockets centrally, move toward the wings to create overloads and he always seems to find a good final ball into the attack.
Key Matchup: Kaick vs. Joaquín Pereyra
This is really going to be a midfield battle to watch on Wednesday night. If Kaick’s positioning is on point, Dallas will be protected in the back. Pereyra will look for the space between Dallas’ midfield and back line, especially when the Loons win possession and Dallas has numbers committed forward. Kaick will need to shut those passing lanes down and make it uncomfortable for Pereyra to get easy passes through to his attacker.

Current form: It has been a rough summer for Minnesota, as they’ve only picked up one win in their last 12 games. They’re currently 1-2-2 in their last five, with the lone win being a blowout win over San Jose.
Where they're at in the standings: Minnesota is currently in 11th place in the Western Conference, with 29 points. They’re one point shy of a playoff spot and two shy of avoiding the Wild Card round.

Three keys for FC Dallas
- Don’t gift early goals: It sounds more obvious than it really is here for FC Dallas. After giving up 15 goals in their last five games, the defense really has to step up in this lone road game for the month. The Loons are perfectly comfortable protecting a lead from a compact defensive shape. Dallas cannot afford to give up a goal early and then chase for 75-80 minutes.
- Protect against the counter: If we thought FC Dallas was comfortable not having the ball for long stretches of a match, Minnesota is on a similar game plan. They’ll look to absorb and then counter with speed. Dallas will need to limit the easy mistakes and giveaways, limiting the number of quick counters the Loons can make.
- Find a Plan B in the attack if Musa is out: We don’t fully know Petar Musa’s stats going into this one (at least of this writing), but if he is held out with a shoulder injury, Dallas has to get more out of guys like Santiago Moreno and Logan Farrington in this one. Get them involved early and find ways to put Minnesota on their back heels quickly.
