The never ending ’will they or won’t they’ for FC Dallas with Designated Player Alan Velasco appears to be coming to a close. Despite the club re-signing him to a new contract last month, it appears the seemingly never ending offers from Argentine giants Boca Juniors has finally hit the breaking point.
According to Cesar Luis Merio, FC Dallas has finally agreed to a $10 million offer from Boca Juniors to acquire Velasco.
The report also states that Velasco did not fly to Dallas this week to report for preseason camp as this deal wraps up in Argentina.
BDS Take
While it will be very disappointing to see FC Dallas lose one of their DPs, just days after trading one to Seattle, I get it. Boca finally came up with an offer that FC Dallas could get behind and earn a bit of profit for what they already invested in Velasco.
By all accounts, this means FC Dallas can take this sell, convert it into even more General Allocation Money, to add to their already embarrassing cache of GAM. If you do the quick math here from the December GAM report, along with the other moves made this winter, they're up to somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 million in GAM already. Add in that $2-ish million in TAM and it is rather crazy what this team could do with that kind of cash.
Yes, this is a huge hit to the roster and it is hard not to think that someone like Patrickson Delgado being signed yesterday is a small piece in the puzzle.
I think at some point, we may have to resign to the fact that this is going to be a full rebuilding year for FC Dallas under new manager Eric Quill. A lot of these moves feel like the club is fully moving on from everything former head coach Nico Estevez wanted to do here. I suppose the only pieces left after this move are finally trading Arriola to Seattle (that will likely come on Monday I'm told) and maybe shop Petar Musa in Europe to see if anyone will be willing to bite on the high price tag they've placed on him.
I would say buckle up at this point, but I think I've done that enough this offseason. Damn.
