In our Monday newsletter (sign up here to receive that in your inbox), I speculated that the coaching search should end this week. As the Major League Soccer season is getting closer to wrapping up for 2024 and the slew of upcoming offseason roster-building events happening after Thanksgiving, the club had to act quickly to get their next head coach in office before those events began to take place.
On Wednesday, FC Dallas made its pick by hiring New Mexico United (and former North Texas SC) head coach Eric Quill as its next manager.
Now that the news has settled on the hiring let’s examine what it means for this offseason and next year.
So, why Quill?
When the coaching search got started, we said there were likely three things to keep an eye on for who could be in the running. The candidate likely needed to be close or have a decent connection with the Hunts. They also needed to have a strong knowledge or understanding of how clubs operate in MLS. And lastly, they needed to be able to develop young talent.
Quill basically checks all three boxes.
