MLS: FC Dallas at Sporting KC Peter G. Aiken

FC Dallas picks up their first win in Kansas City on Saturday since August of 2011 in a 3-2 victory.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja

General thoughts on the match…

We were challenged with a lot of personality, determination and character. I thought the boys did an excellent job and I want to recognize our footballers for giving such great character today. To get three points, it put us in a good spot and we will keep going.

On Barrios…

It’s great to see him in the score line. It’s great to see him being a part of that and giving us the opportunity to take those points. I know Mikey has worked very hard just to get those goals. He has been playing well, but he hasn’t found the net. Today, the game rewarded him. He was disciplined on the job and at the same time he was very generous with his teammates and this was a reward for Mikey. It was an excellent job for him and obviously with his teammates that work intense all the time.

On using Barrios tactically in 1v1s…

We knew that Mikey creates on the counter, especially on that side coming out of the back and we know they try to put a lot of sequences in the middle. We knew that we were going to have some counter options and they key was to play it to Mikey up front. Tesho [Akindele] and [Roland] Lamah did a good job too. So was Maxi playing underneath. He sustained the game defensively too because Maxi’s job there is terrific. He can free Mikey and just those diagonals and the plan worked very well.

On team’s trajectory

We have said since the first day of the season, we are going to grind one game at a time. We’re not looking back, we’re not looking forward too much, we just live in the present and today the boys got three points. Now we’re going to prepare for San Jose in our next game, that’s the way this group has faced this year.

On Marquinhos Pedroso…

He did great. It’s great timing for us to have somebody who can come and give us a hand there. We have Maynor and we have Ryan who have done a great job on that side, but having somebody else who today tested what Major League Soccer is about, especially with those fast wingers and the plays where he started the play. He did a good job. He has been here for two weeks and one of those has been getting his Visa. So, credit to him and his willingness to belong to this group and also to the coaches who have prepared him very well physically, mentally and tried to merge him into what Major League Soccer is.

Midfielder Michael Barrios

On scoring first professional hat trick...

I’m very happy. It’s my first hat trick in my professional career. I’m happy with all the team’s work and my individual work as well. I hope to continue gaining coach’s trust and my teammates’ as well.

On overcoming a slow start to the season...

All thanks to the sacrifice and the daily work. The trust that my teammates have given me and the coaching staff as well. And this result is where you can see the hard work reflected.

On Oscar’s game plan...

Coach just asked me to make diagonal passes between the center defenders. We know the quality or conditions that Opara, Besler and take advantage of my speed and thank god I was able to score the three goals and a win for the whole team.

Defender Matt Hedges

General thoughts on the match...

We haven’t had good results in the past, so getting three points here is humongous for us.

On Barrios’ Performance...

Yeah, I think everybody is super happy for Michael. He’s had some games where he’s struggled, and he’s trying to find his form. And to get three goals like that here is huge.

On heading to the 2018 MLS All-Star Game...

It’s always fun to be involved in that kind of thing. All the players from around the league and we’re playing a great team like Juventus, so it’s always a fun experience with everything going on.

Defender Marquinhos Pedroso

On his MLS debut...

I feel great. For almost 70 days without play because I was on vacation and now we have to make quickly the things and train and put in the group and learn what the coach wants. So, the first game every time is difficult, but thanks God we won. We fight, we make a great game, but took the last goal that maybe we were a little bit under concentrated. But I think it was perfect because it was a long time. I think it was six or seven years that we’ve won here. So, now we won and I think we can continue this process.

Adjusting as the match went along...

Today, I can feel this inside. It’s a great feeling, all the stadiums are nice and all because here everything works. It’s good, the championship is good, everybody helps you, so today was a great day for me because it was my debut in MLS and I hope to do many, many games in this league.

On chemistry with back line...

It’s good because they play together for a long time. Sometimes it’s a little different because I have to speak Spanish with some guys in the middle with the guy at my side. And then English after, you go change and change sometimes, you know, you change something. But it’s nice, the guys help me. They are amazing since I am here. I hope that we continue this process and we can win a lot of games.
