On Thursday morning, FC Dallas officially welcomed Eric Quill back to the club as its ninth head coach.
The team had to wait a couple of weeks to do this press conference, thanks to last week being a holiday week and for the fact that Quill himself had to begin the process of moving back to North Texas from New Mexico.
I was on hand in person today at the stadium for the press conference that involved owners Dan and Clark Hunt, technical director Andre Zanotta and Quill. While most of the press conference was a bit of media fluff, there were a few moments of intrigue to discuss.
On the mentality Quill wants for his players
"I'm here to win," said Quill. "That's always been my in my DNA. It's right away to give these guys understanding in the mentality shift and what becoming a team actually looks like. And that's what you're going to see, is you'll see very quickly, a team that's bought in, a team that fights together, and a team that you'll be super proud of. But you know, you'll leave the stadium understanding the mentality of what FC Dallas is, and that's that's first priority, is the change mentality of this group."
Yeah, some typical coach speak here on what he wants out of his players. Later on, Quill also discussed how some players on the roster had poor moments that they shouldn't have or weren't consistent with the level of play that they should have on a game-to-game basis.
It does sound like we will see a coach that pushes his players a bit differently than we saw under Nico Estevez. Maybe not the same lines as Peter Luccin but I would guess closer to Luccin in terms of the energy and passion on the field.
On what formation Quill plans to use
This one was probably something most fans were curious about going into this press conference. Quill was asked fairly direct about what he wants to use on the field and the new manager was quick to say he is still working on what will be best for the club.
"We're still building our game model. So formations are, you know, something we're going to be discussing," said Quill. "Nothing guaranteed right now, but the roster bill is on, on its way, and we'll continue to speak with Sandro and Andre about, you know, best practices, formations, all that stuff coming soon, down, down the road, but there's nothing guaranteed."
This tells me that the club will likely be fairly active in next week's trade window before the Expansion Draft.
