The margins are always razor thin in the Texas Derby and Saturday’s edition was possibly one of the wildest matches between FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo to date as the game ended 2-2 after both teams scored stoppage-time penalty kicks.

The draw helps secure the Texas Derby for FC Dallas for the 2026 season.

Dallas went on top early in the match, when Chris Cappis scored a first half goal to set the tone of the match for Dallas. Newcomer Daniel Job then earn himself a penalty kick midway through the half. Petar Musa scored on one attempt but had to retake the penalty, only to have Jonathan Bond save the shot.

Shortly after halftime, Houston responded in the second half with a goal from Hector Herrera off a corner kick. Dallas appeared to have a response with a goal from Herman Johansson that was called back after video review determined the Swede was offside.

The Dynamo then went on top a minute into stoppage time when Nolan Norris was called for a handball in the penalty area. Mateusz Bogusz scored what seemed to be the go-ahead goal.

As luck would have it, Dallas would earn another penalty moments later when Duncan McGuire fouled Ran Binyamin in the penalty box. Musa stepped up again and this time he scored his 20th goal of the season.

Geez, what a Derby match.

For a moment, it felt like this one was going to be wasted after the missed penalty and VAR called back the goal. But, now we’re looking at a wild draw that helped secure El Capitan.

About the Subs

At the hour mark, Eric Quill made a double-sub by bringing on Joaquin Valiente and Santiago Moreno on for Daniel Job and Patrickson Delgado. In the 79th minute, Ran Binyamin came in for Herman Johansson. The final sub came in the 88th minute when Sam Sarver came on for Bernard Kamungo.

Man of the Match

I know he didn’t go the full 90 but Daniel Job was the right call from Quill for this game. His speed and movement on the ball caused a lot of issues for Houston.

Where does this fit into the season

The draw pushes Dallas to 51 points on the season, which now puts FCD back into a draw with St. Louis for second place.

What’s next for FC Dallas

After three games in seven days, FC Dallas will get a bit of a break with only one game next week. They’ll return home to host the San Jose Earthquakes on October 24.
