If there is one thing that defined FC Dallas’ 2024 season other than injuries, it may have been the use of a 3-4-3 formation. Former head coach Nico Estevez established that he wanted to use that formation last preseason to get more attacking players on the field.

When he was let go in June, interim manager Peter Luccin picked up those pieces and continued to run the 3-4-3 until the club was eliminated from playoff contention in October. In the final couple of games, he returned to a 4-3-3 look that saw the club earn a scoreless draw in Portland before downing Sporting Kansas City in the season finale.

As we begin to look forward to 2025 under a new manager, Eric Quill, the question is: What will the team actually look like?

Today, we’ll spend a little bit of time diving into the formation that Quill used in the USL Championship with New Mexico United (and with North Texas SC).

As USL expert John Morrissey explains, Quill runs a 4-2-3-1 setup, similar to what FC Dallas used to employ under former head coach Oscar Pareja.
