On a rainy night in Frisco, FC Dallas dropped its first game of the 2025 season in a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Fire. The win for the Fire gives them the Brimstone Cup for the 2025 season.
The Fire got a goal and assist from Hugo Cuypers, while Logan Farrington scored the loan Dallas goal on the night.
FC Dallas nearly broke the deadlock in the 13th minute on an easy tap-in from Musa. Dallas had a nice buildup play that saw Acosta get the ball out wide. He then chipped the ball into the penalty area where Musa was wide open around the six-yard box to easily tap in a goal past Chris Brady. The goal was taken away after video review determined Musa was offside.
Two minutes into the second half, FC Dallas finally had another good chance on goal. Anderson Julio picked off Jonathan Dean in his own defensive end. He then played a quick give and go with Farrington. Julio received the ball in the penalty area, but Brady made a big stop to keep the game level.
In the 57th minute, Farrington found the back of the net. Julio played a ball over the Chicago defense that Farrington was able to get one touch past a Chicago defender before poking the ball past Brady for an easy tap in.
The Fire found two goals in two minutes, first in the 82nd minute as Andrew Gutman snuck in behind the Dallas defense to tap in a cross from Hugo Cuypers. Two minutes later, the Fire took the lead as Maarten Paes made a diving save on a shot from Brian Gutierrez, but the rebound was put away by Leonardo Barroso.
In the final minutes of the match, the Fire earned a penalty kick as Sebastien Ibeagha fouled Cuypers right on the edge of the penalty area. Cuypers slotted the goal to the left of Paes to help seal the match and the Brimstone Cup.
Video review was brought into question in the fourth minute of stoppage time as a handball was whistled on the Fire in the penalty area. Musa stepped up to the penalty and saw his attempt saved by Brady.
Instant Reaction: Well, that killed the good vibes.
The more this one went on, the more it felt like it was going to be one of those rough, scoreless nights for both teams. But, defensively mistakes continue to creep in and Chicago took full advantage of the issues along the wings late in the match.
While I get that Eric Quill doesn't go to his bench just for the heck of it in MLS, this was probably an evening where he could have made a couple of subs right after the Farrington goal to help solidify things.
About the Subs: Quill went to his bench in the 65th minute as Patrickson Delgado came on for Farrington. Shortly after the second Chicago goal, Bernard Kamungo and Tsiki Ntsabeleng came on for Sebastian Lletget and Anderson Julio. Pedrinho was the final sub late in the match, as he came on for Shaq Moore.
Man of the Match: On the field, let's go with Farrington. But, outside of that, if you sat in the downpour at Toyota Stadium...you deserve a MOTM honor.
What’s next for FC Dallas: FC Dallas will remain home for another week as they host the Vancouver Whitecaps next weekend.
