The offseason is officially underway!

FC Dallas began their offseason this week. They are moving into a weird period where they are still training before doing final medical checks and then departing (likely within the next week or two) for the year.

We recently did a little game in which you could play the FC Dallas GM for the day and decide who you wanted to stay with next season and who you wanted to say goodbye to this offseason.

We had a lot of responses (thank you for taking the time to do it!), and boy, you all have some opinions. Last year, I only discussed the out-of-contract players and those with options for the following season. This time around, we will do a bit more than that.

Current roster status

FC Dallas has about half of its roster under contract for 2025 (and in some cases beyond that), while the rest is up for discussion.

Out of Contract

Asier Illarramendi

GM Results:

Thoughts: I’m a bit split on this one. On the one hand, if you can have a healthy version of this guy for 25-28 games in a season, he is worth keeping on for another season at that salary. But he’s not getting any younger, and losing him for even ten games a season is a high-risk move in my book.

Roster decision: Retain him

The veteran continued to guide the club in 2024.

Ruan

GM Results:

Thoughts: If you keep a 3-4-3 system, you keep this guy. But if FC Dallas is going to move back to a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 system in 2025 under Peter Luccin or someone else, then I’m not sure he’s as needed in that type of system.
