The summer transfer window is finally open for Major League Soccer teams, including FC Dallas. New players can be officially signed, trades within MLS can be made, and more.
Some of you may be wondering why FC Dallas has already been making moves this month ahead of the opening, but that is normal. All of those dominoes are leading up to the summer window opening.
I know I already discussed what I thought FC Dallas should do last month, and in some ways, FC Dallas has already been working at chipping away at my short list. So, let’s recap real quick what moves have already been made, what rumors are out there, and what is still left to do.
Incoming
Josh Torquato - This was the quickest and easiest one for FC Dallas to make. Torquato occupies a homegrown slot on the roster and can still head down to North Texas SC should the club need him to get more minutes. (Note: I don’t think that is going to happen; he’s a Quill guy through and through at this point.)
Lucious Dee Deedson - What I think we’ll say is a like-for-like Leo Chu replacement. At least in terms of salary, I think on the field could be drastically different than what Chu brought to Dallas (or really what he didn’t end up bringing to Dallas).
Outgoing
Leo Chu - Chu came in the trade for Jesus Ferreira back in January. He arrived in Frisco out of shape, then got sick, then saw some minutes before getting hurt. We hardly saw anything good outside of a game-winning goal in March against Sporting KC from Chu. His leaving opened up a U22 slot, should the club want to remain on that roster profile path.
Antonio Carrera - This was certainly an out-of-left-field kind of move, but one that likely won’t impact anything in the near term for FC Dallas other than the small profit they’ll pick up.
Show - The club opted not to extend his loan or purchase it at the end of June. This move opened up about $400k of salary cap space.
Rumor Time
Marco Farfan - Tigres picked up Carrera, and now they appear to be in the market for Farfan. There hasn’t been a ton of smoke on this rumor since it was mentioned a week or so ago, but with Torquato showing some real promise for FC Dallas in a similar position to Farfan, the club could easily move Farfan for a small profit.
Christian Cappis - I haven’t had the time to bring up this rumor from Tom Bogert, but this felt like a solid spot for it. Cappis was a former FC Dallas academy player, who should have been a HGP had it not been for some territory rights held by Houston. He’s time in Europe appears done and could be a solid boost for the Dallas midfield.
What is left to do
Being four points out of a playoff spot, there is actually a lot that can be done. I may have not felt that way even a week ago, but the parity in MLS is real. There are a couple big ones they have to sort out.
