FC Dallas fans have been patiently waiting for two things: the Alan Velasco deal with Boca Juniors to wrap up and the Velasco replacement rumor to kick in.
Now that teams in Major League Soccer can trade cash for players, one could be coming to Dallas. Tom Bogert is reporting that as FC Cincinnati is looking to figure out what to do with former MLS MVP Luciano Acosta, that FC Dallas could be his landing spot in MLS.
Sources point to FC Dallas as a club with interest for Acosta and a need for a new DP No. 10 following Alan Velasco's transfer to Boca Juniors. Another way these deals are all connected is the fact Acosta has publicly said he wanted to go to Boca Juniors, but Boca spent $10 million to sign Velasco from Dallas. Now, Dallas are in the market for a No. 10 and could turn to Acosta.
There are other clubs outside of MLS who want Acosta too, sources add.
Acosta has been looking to leave Cincinnati and MLS, but the club may not be able to transfer him to his preferred club in Argentine. The same club that happens to be where Velasco is landing, Boca Juniors.
BDS Take
I'll be honest, I didn't see FC Dallas as a major player in the cash trades this quickly. What this tells me is that the club knows the market for a Velasco replacement may not come this winter ahead of the start of the 2025 season. So, this is one quick and viable way to get a Designated Player on the roster as soon as possible.
Acosta finished the 2024 season with 14 goals and 19 assists. His MLS MVP winning season in 2023 saw him score 17 goals and add 14 assists. Even at half of that production would be more than most players FC Dallas had in each of those two seasons.
The big question will be whether or not Acosta wants to remain in MLS. By all indications this winter, it sounds like he wants to go back to Argentina as he was a no-show for the start of the preseason camp for FCC.
Still, it is good to see that FC Dallas could be willing to make a big play for someone like Acosta.
