Our 2024 FC Dallas player recaps continue with rookie forward Logan Farrington.

In the SuperDraft last December, FC Dallas traded up to third to snag the forward from Oregon State. The move proved to be a wise one as Farrington went on to lead all rookies in both goals (4) and assists (8).

Stat breakdown

Going into this look at Farrington, I had in my head that he played a lot more this season than 1,225 minutes. Which may make this four goals and eight assists figure even more impressive.

He wrapped up the season with 4.04 shot creation actions per 90, 0.81 goal scoring actions per 90, both in the top percentile of the league. His GCA is on par with some of the best players in MLS.

What stood out to me was his defending up the field. He was one of the few FC Dallas attackers that worked hard at defending in the attacking third. The times that he got after teams, it paid off. Which is why Luccin kept using him in the final third of the season.

Lastly, one fun fact on Farrington this season. He became one of six players in MLS history to record multiple games with a goal and an assist off the bench in a single season - MIN (June 19) and LAFC (Sept. 21).

Highlight

Farrington found the back of the net a few times this year in both league play and US Open Cup play. But I keep going back to this one against the LA Galaxy.

That my friends is a pure striker’s finish. I love it. A lot of rookies struggle to remain calm in these situations, but Farrington made one hell of a long run to get on the end of the pass from Asier Illarramendi.

Should we expect him back in 2025?

Uh, yes. There is no reason why the club won’t pick up his option for next season. He’s still going to be on a league minimum rookie contract and will likely remain on the Supplemental roster in 2025 (which doesn’t count against the salary cap).

Final thoughts

Unlike most rookies, Farrington never seemed to hit a rookie wall in the middle of the summer. And when the club transitioned from Nico Estevez to Peter Luccin, he only improved.

I said all season long that Farrington would have won a Rookie of the Year award, if the league was still handing out that award. It was a shame he wasn’t under 22 years old either, or he would have been on the 22 Under 22 list and likely been up for the Young Player of the Year award.

But I digress. Farrington was an excellent addition to this roster this season. When you move up that high into the draft order of any SuperDraft, you have to knock it out of the park with your pick. FC Dallas did that with Farrington. I fully believe FC Dallas can move forward with Farrington as a backup to Petar Musa.
