The last year or two as an FC Dallas fan has been a roller coaster ride. There have been good days followed by many, many weird and bad days. I’m not talking about just on the field, but off the field, too.

As FC Dallas has moved on from Lucho Acosta, I thought it would be good to take a step back and try to understand why this move didn’t work out and why it is actually a good thing that the team moved on from him as quickly as they did this summer.

It isn’t every day that you see a MLS team acquire a Designated Player like Acosta, one that is a former league MVP to boot, and then get rid of him all in the same season because it wasn’t working out both on and off the field.

Square peg, round hole

I made this analogy a couple of weeks ago following FC Dallas’ disappointing 4-3 loss to NYCFC where Acosta made an appearance off the bench and the teams energy seemed to completely die the moment he stepped out onto the field.

As the season rolled on, the goals and assists weren’t piling up for Acosta. We got a lot of lost possession out of him during games, passes that didn’t connect well with teammates, and a real lack of ambition inside the penalty area. I won’t get too into those missed penalty kicks out of him this season either.
