The Texas Derby is back at Toyota Stadium this weekend, and yeah...this one never needs any extra hype. The Houston Dynamo roll into Frisco looking to make an early statement in this year’s Texas Derby and Copa Tejas. The weird wrinkle for the Dynamo, this is their first real road test of the season, and Derby matches have a funny way of exposing whether or not early form is legit or a product of being at home.
The history between these two is messy, heated, and usually tight. Throw standings out the window, this game rarely follows logic. The clash of styles between the two sides will turn this one into a scrap.
For Dallas, this is all about protecting the home turf and setting a tone in the rivalry early. For Houston, it‘s a chance to prove their early-season momentum can travel up I-45.
Let’s dig into the Orange.
Potential Lineup & Tactic Style:
Under Ben Olsen, Houston wants to control the game with the ball and then pick you apart once your shape begins to bend. This isn’t a chaos team, though last week’s result against Portland may suggest otherwise. Instead, they’re a structured, patient and honestly a little annoying if you’re looking to press them.
Projected XI: (4-2-3-1) Bond; Antonio Carlos, Sviatchenko, Andrade; Ennali, Bouzat, McGlynn, Holmes; Guilherme, Bogusz; Ponce
- Offensive tendencies - With the likes of Bogusz and Guilherme leading the attack, the Dynamo finally have some offensive juice to go alongside McGlynn.
- Defensive shape - The Dynamo run a similar defensive shape to Dallas, with three center backs and two wing backs when they are in a defensive look. Currently, they rank 29th in MLS in defensive actions.
Key Player: Mateusz Bogusz
The former LAFC striker has been a big addition to the Orange’s attack in 2026. Aside from his game-winner last week against Portland, Bogusz knows what it takes to be a big scorer in MLS. In 2024 (his most recent season with LAFC), he scored 15 goals and added four assists.

Key Matchup: Jack McGlynn vs Chris Cappis/Kaick
For Dallas, controlling the amount of time McGlynn gets on the ball is going to be key. He’s the type of player who can quietly control a game if you give him the time. He’s not going to blow by you with pace, but give him the space on the ball and he’ll start pinging passes that stretch your shape and pull defenders out of position. Everything runs through him in the midfield, which means Kaick (and/or Ramiro) and Chris Cappis have to step in and limit his time on the ball.

Three keys for FC Dallas
- Apply the pressure: Following last week’s performance against San Diego, we saw a new wrinkle out of Eric Quill’s side that we hadn’t seen before that worked well, a higher press. With Petar Musa, Joaquin Valiente, Cappis, Kaick and others applying more pressure up the field, it created havoc for San Diego. Houston loves to have the ball at their feet like San Diego, so applying the same pressure early on against their defense will be a factor in this one.
- Stand your ground: It is a Derby game, after all. You have to have some composure in this one and not allow the moment to get to you too much. This game will be chippy, at times sloppy and certainly chaotic.
- Finish the chances: Aside from Musa, the rest of the Dallas attack has to figures out how to finish their chances in this one. There will be opportunities in and around the penalty area, as Houston does give up chances. But Dallas has to make the most of them in this game.
