It is a new week in the FC Dallas offseason. As of this writing, the club has not announced its roster moves for the end of the year or explained what they believe they will do this upcoming winter. But that isn’t holding us back from diving into some items and areas that we believe the club should focus on this winter.
Below are a couple of key areas that FC Dallas should hopefully address this winter. Faithful readers of Big D Soccer will probably see a theme from previous offseason posts like this, as its another round of asking for the club to spend big on certain areas. Let’s get into it.
Another TAM-level center back
Would I prefer a Designated Player that is a defensive midfielder or a center back? Yes.
But I’m a realist here and this is FC Dallas we’re talking about. They’re going to spend on defensive players, but they’re not going to use those slots on those positions very often (Carlos Gruezo is a rare instance for them).
But, going into 2025, FC Dallas did spend some TAM-level money on a center back in Osaze Urhoghide. And it paid off. Urhoghide has the ability to become a Best XI or MLS Defender of the Year type of player. But he needs another partner to help get him there.
That is what I want to see more than anything else this winter. That includes another DP in the attack. The defense has to continue to get younger and improve at the same time.
Now the question is, will they be willing to do it again and take this defense to a truly different level? Is there someone out there on the international market that makes sense like Urhoghide did for the club? Or, do you stay within MLS and bring someone like a Walker Zimmerman back to Dallas for the final few years of his career on a max-TAM type of deal?
