It appears that FC Dallas is in a mode of matches where they grind out a result. The problem with the last two games (against LAFC and at Austin the week prior) is that the two draws are not moving the needle is much as you’d like at this stage in the season.
FC Dallas needs wins, but they’re settling for draws.
Let’s dive into one more look at the draw against LAFC to break down some stats from the match and where things stand for the season over all.
Priority on the defense
I discussed this a bit yesterday in the game breakdown, but FC Dallas really did seem to operate with eight in the back at times in this game. Giving up around 65% or so of the possession, manager Eric Quill is showing that he wants his team to take in the pressure from the other club, limit the number of quality chances on goal and then play for turnovers that lead to quick counter attacks.
Against LAFC, for the most part, that game plan worked well. As you can see from the shot map, LAFC only had a couple of good or great looks on goal.

The downfall of this approach is if the attack isn’t able to muster good or great chances of their own in the limited looks that they get, but we’ll get into that another time.
Let’s breakdown the final numbers for the defense from this one.
