The 2026 World Cup Knockout Round, Predicted

We predicted the group stage. Some of it held up. Some of it blew up spectacularly. Now we’re picking every knockout round game — Round of 32 through the Final.

We told you to hold us accountable. You’re welcome to start now.

Our group stage predictions went sideways in some genuinely entertaining ways. We had Uruguay advancing out of Group H, they’re now home due to a disastrous run. We picked South Korea to go through, and apparently South Africa had other ideas in Group A. And Turkey? We had them coming in second place in the USMNT’s group. Their only moment of decent play came in a final match against a heavily rotated American squad that had already clinched the group.

Also, Cape Verde is in the Round of 32. They drew Spain in the opener. This tournament has already been worth every minute.

The good news: the broad strokes held. The big dogs - Brazil, Netherlands, France, Argentina, England, Germany, Spain, Portugal - all advanced and looked fairly comfortable at times in doing so. The bracket is loaded. And now we’re going to do this all over again, except this time there are no more draws. Every match from here is win or go home.

We’re picking every game, Round of 32 through the Final. One more time — hold us accountable.

A Quick Look Back: Where We Got It Wrong
Our PickWhat Actually Happened
Uruguay advances from Group H❌ Cape Verde took 2nd. Uruguay's went home with loads of issues.
South Korea advances from Group A❌ South Africa took 2nd. The Koreans lost out on a third place spot late.
Türkiye finishes 2nd in Group D❌ Türkiye beat the USA 3–2, but were eliminated before that game kicked off.
Ecuador 2nd in Group E❌ Ivory Coast took 2nd after Ecuador's shock exit.
Canada wins Group B❌ Switzerland won Group B. Canada finished 2nd.
France, Netherlands, England, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium all advance✅ All of them through. The big dogs showed up.
Brazil and Morocco both advance from Group C✅ Correct. Scores were different but the result held.
Round of 32 — Left Side of Bracket
🇩🇪 Germany vs. 🇵🇾 Paraguay
✅ Germany
Paraguay making the Round of 32 as a third-place team is a fine story. Germany ends it efficiently. This is a tune-up.
🇫🇷 France vs. 🇸🇪 Sweden
✅ France
Sweden's tournament has been a bit all over the place. France's has been dominant. Mbappé ends Sweden's run before the hour mark.
🇿🇦 South Africa vs. 🇨🇦 Canada
✅ Canada
South Africa's run was one of the great stories of this group stage. Bafana Bafana go home with their heads held high.
🇳🇱 Netherlands vs. 🇲🇦 Morocco
✅ Netherlands
Morocco are dangerous again but the Dutch at full strength were simply too much.
🇵🇹 Portugal vs. 🇭🇷 Croatia
✅ Portugal
Croatia — and our own Petar Musa — get one last shot. Portugal is the stronger side and Ronaldo will want to make this count. This is probably his last World Cup knockout game. Portugal advances, Ronaldo scores, and Musa gets a deserved moment even in defeat.
🇪🇸 Spain vs. 🇦🇹 Austria
✅ Spain
Austria made it out of a tough group and deserve credit for being here. Spain's Lamine Yamal and Pedri are operating at a different level entirely. Spain wins comfortably and without much drama.
🇺🇸 USA vs. 🇧🇦 Bosnia-Herzegovina
✅ USA
Home soil, Pulisic will be the difference. The USMNT delivered when it mattered most.
🇧🇪 Belgium vs. 🇸🇳 Senegal
✅ Belgium
This one literally could be a toss-up. Senegal snuck through as a solid third-place team in a tough group. Belgium didn't look great until they needed to.
Round of 32 — Right Side of Bracket
🇧🇷 Brazil vs. 🇯🇵 Japan
✅ Brazil
Japan are not a fluke but Brazil is Brazil. Vinicius Jr. will be locked in from the jump.
🇨🇮 Ivory Coast vs. 🇳🇴 Norway 🏟️ Dallas Stadium
✅ Norway
Haaland has been a wrecking ball all group stage. Ivory Coast are a legitimate side but Norway's firepower is the difference. Haaland scores — of course he does — and Norway advances.
📍 AT&T/Dallas Stadium — June 30
🇲🇽 Mexico vs. 🇪🇨 Ecuador
✅ Mexico
Mexico at home in Mexico City in the Round of 32. The atmosphere will be suffocating. Ecuador is a quality third-place side but they cannot handle 80,000 hostile fans and El Tri at full tilt. Mexico wins it.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England vs. 🇨🇩 DR Congo
✅ England
England at full tilt with Bellingham, Saka, and Kane is too much. England wins without breaking a sweat.
🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇨🇻 Cape Verde
✅ Argentina
Cape Verde reaching the Round of 32 is the feel-good story of this entire tournament. Argentina and Messi end it. It won't be close. Messi scores two, takes a moment to acknowledge what Cape Verde accomplished, and moves on.
🇦🇺 Australia vs. 🇪🇬 Egypt 🏟️ Dallas Stadium
✅ Australia
Egypt and Salah have been good. Australia has been legitimately impressive — they beat Türkiye in the group stage and have a swagger about them. The Socceroos advance in a tight, physical match that goes to the wire.
📍 AT&T/Dallas Stadium — July 3
🇨🇭 Switzerland vs. 🇩🇿 Algeria
✅ Switzerland
Switzerland won Group B and have been one of the underrated sides of the group stage. Organized, clinical on the counter, too experienced for Algeria over 90 minutes. Switzerland advances.
🇨🇴 Colombia vs. 🇬🇭 Ghana
✅ Colombia
Colombia won Group K and have been one of the dark horses of the tournament. Ghana snuck through as a third-place team and deserve credit for getting here. Colombia has too much quality and dispatches Ghana to set up a compelling Round of 16.
Round of 16 — Left Side
🇩🇪 Germany vs. 🇨🇦 Canada
✅ Germany
Canada's run ends here. Germany is a class above and this result isn't particularly close. Canada has punched well above their weight and should leave proud. Germany advances to the quarters.
🇫🇷 France vs. 🇳🇱 Netherlands
✅ France
Two of the most dangerous attacks in the tournament. Mbappé scores twice. Gakpo gets one back. France wins 2–1 in a match that belongs in a World Cup highlight reel. Netherlands go home having done everything right except drawn a different opponent.
🇵🇹 Portugal vs. 🇪🇸 Spain 🏟️ Dallas Stadium
✅ Spain
The Iberian derby at the World Cup Round of 16, right here in North Texas. Ronaldo scores — he always scores in matches like this. But Spain's collective quality is too much. Yamal runs rings around the Portuguese backline. Spain wins 2–1 in what should be an absolute classic.
📍 AT&T/Dallas Stadium — Round of 16
🇺🇸 USA vs. 🇧🇪 Belgium
✅ USA
Belgium is the better team on paper. But the USA in a knockout game at home, riding a wave of momentum after beating Bosnia, with a packed house losing their minds? We're picking the upset. Balogun scores the winner. American soccer has a moment.
Round of 16 — Right Side
🇧🇷 Brazil vs. 🇳🇴 Norway
✅ Brazil
Haaland vs. Vinicius Jr. is the individual matchup of the Round of 16. Haaland scores. Vinicius scores twice. Brazil wins 2–1 in a match that's more fun than anyone expected. Norway goes home having exceeded every expectation.
🇲🇽 Mexico vs. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England
✅ England
The Azteca. Mexico's best possible Round of 16 scenario. England survives the atmosphere and steals it late. Kane headers home in the 82nd minute. Mexico is devastated. England moves on.
🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇦🇺 Australia
✅ Argentina
Australia's tournament has been the great surprise of 2026. Argentina ends it. Messi scores multiple times. The Socceroos go home celebrated. Argentina is into the quarters and Messi's last dance continues.
🇨🇭 Switzerland vs. 🇨🇴 Colombia
✅ Colombia
Switzerland always causes problems and will make Colombia work for every inch. But Colombia has been the dark horse of this tournament and has too much attacking quality to be contained for 90 minutes. Colombia edges it 2–1 and books a quarter-final spot.
Quarter-Finals
🇩🇪 Germany vs. 🇫🇷 France
✅ France
Germany vs. France at a World Cup quarter-final is exactly the kind of match this expanded format was built to produce. Germany makes it a game — deep, organized, dangerous. But France have Mbappé and the momentum of knocking out the Netherlands. France wins 2–1.
🇪🇸 Spain vs. 🇺🇸 USA
✅ Spain
This is where the USMNT run ends, and it's a hell of a run to end on. A quarter-final against the defending European champions after beating Belgium in the Round of 16. Spain wins 2–0. The USA goes home having converted a generation of new fans. American soccer will look back on this tournament as a turning point.
🇧🇷 Brazil vs. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England
✅ Brazil
Brazil vs. England in a World Cup quarter-final is a poster. England battle. Kane scores. Vinicius Jr. scores twice. Brazil advances 2–1 in the kind of match that makes you remember why you love this sport. England's eternal hurt continues.
🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇨🇴 Colombia
✅ Argentina
Colombia has been the best story on the right side of the bracket. Argentina is the defending champion with Messi in his last World Cup. It's tight, physical, and decided by a Messi free kick in extra time. Argentina are in the semis. Colombia can be proud of everything.
Semi-Finals
🇫🇷 France vs. 🇪🇸 Spain 🏟️ Dallas Stadium
✅ France
The match everyone in Europe wanted — and North Texas gets to host it. Spain go ahead through Yamal in the first half. France equalizes through Mbappé before halftime. Extra time. Mbappé wins it with 8 minutes left. Spain are out. Yamal will be back. France are in their second final in eight years.
📍 AT&T/Dallas Stadium — Semi-Final
🇧🇷 Brazil vs. 🇦🇷 Argentina
✅ Brazil
The one the whole world wanted. The greatest rivalry in football, at the World Cup semi-final. Messi scores first. Brazil scores twice. Argentina throw everything at Brazil in the final 20 minutes. It doesn't come. Brazil are in the final and Messi's World Cup is over. It's devastating and it's beautiful and it's football.
Third Place Match — Miami Gardens, July 18
🇪🇸 Spain vs. 🇦🇷 Argentina
✅ Argentina
Argentina is emotionally wrecked but Messi gets one more game. He scores. The standing ovation lasts ten minutes. Messi's final World Cup match ends with a goal and a bronze medal and the kind of sendoff only he deserves. Nobody in the stadium wants it to end.
🏆 The Final — MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, July 19
🇫🇷 France vs. 🇧🇷 Brazil
✅ France 2–1
The two most decorated programs in World Cup history. Vinicius Jr. scores first. France equalizes through Dembélé. Mbappé wins it in the second half with a finish that will be on highlight reels until the 2030 tournament. France win their third World Cup and their second in eight years. Mbappé lifts the trophy at 27. The wait since 2018 is over.
