It is time for another FC Dallas player recap from the 2025 season, with a look at the Abilene Dream, Bernard Kamungo.

Stat breakdown

It was a wild year for Kamungo. He was a winger early in the year, but then was converted (wisely this time) to a fullback late in the season.

Let’s dive into some fancy graphs and charts on Kamungo’s season. I’ve got it split between his time as a winger and a fullback.

So, there is a lot to take away there. I don’t think it is any secret that Kamungo came alive as a fullback under Eric Quill. The shift from a 4-2-3-1 formation into a 5-2-3 made it so Kamungo could be on the field and actually have a place that made sense for him.

Where it didn’t work in 2024 under Nico Estevez, Quill was able to unlock something in Kamungo at fullback. Perhaps a future Best XI? Maybe. Kamungo still had his moments, but he looked more like the Kamungo we saw early on with North Texas SC a couple of years ago. Dangerous. Free to roam at times. And above all, he was having fun again.

Highlight

I will probably always go back to this goal against Austin as a highlight for Bernie in 2025. For me, it showed he belonged as a fullback that could get forward and contribue.

What to expect in 2026?

If Quill continues to use the 5-2-3 again, which I think he will, Kamungo has a natural home at fullback. If a shift to another formations happens, Kamungo could be an odd man out unless he adapts like he did in 2025.

Final thoughts

Kamungo’s story continues to be a wild one, but a good one. Just when you think he’s down, out and doesn’t have a path forward in MLS, he comes back and surprises you.

Quill challenged him in 2025. He told him a couple of times that he didn’t have a future in this league and with FC Dallas if he didn’t adapt and learn a new position. To Kamungo’s credit, he took that challenge and ran with it. We didn’t see that in 2024 when Nico Estevez tried to move him to fullback.

For me, I want to see more growth as a fullback in 2026 out of Kamungo. Yes, more goals or assists would be great, but I want growth. I want him to be THE GUY at his position in the league. He has the tools and desire to do it, now he has to put that to good use.
