Defense reigned supreme on Sunday night at Toyota Stadium. North Texas SC and Greenville Triumph SC waited through a scoreless FC Dallas friendly against Club Tijuana. Once the two USL teams did get on the field, they too played to a 0-0 draw. The game marked the halfway point in the season for NTSC, and it was also the first ever home match that NTSC did not win.
North Texas SC saw the return of Bicou Bissainthe in the midfield, who came back to the club from national team duty with Haiti in the country’s mighty Gold Cup run in which they made it to the semifinals and nearly stunned Mexico.
NTSC was still missing several quality players. Some academy players missed to compete in the U18-19 Development Academy Championships in Irvine, California. Other NTSC regulars featured for FC Dallas in their friendly against Tijuana. Jonathan Gomez and Callum Montgomery, who have had recent appearances for NTSC, started for FC Dallas, and Alfusainey Jatta subbed in at halftime for FC Dallas.
Cristian Escribano made his debut in this match for NTSC, starting in the right back position. Escribano is a 17-year-old academy player for FCD who was born in Spain.
This game was a pretty slow match without a lot of action. Greenville sat deep, not creating many chances of their own, but proving too difficult for NTSC to break down.
In the 30th minute, a great corner kick delivery from Arturo Rodriguez found the captain, Brecc Evans, at the far post. Evans headed the ball off the post, but it would not have counted anyways because NTSC was whistled for a foul.
Ten minutes later, Arturo Rodriguez had another dangerous set piece delivery, this time on a free kick. It was too far in front of the NTSC players in the box to connect with any of them, but for a second it seemed like the ball could curl its way inside the back post. Instead, it flew wide of the goal.
In the 43rd minute, Cristian Colman had a volley at the top of the box which forced a save by the Greenville keeper, Dallas Jaye.
Ronaldo Damus had the best chance of the night in the 50th minute. A first time ball by David Rodriguez slipped Damus in behind his defenders. The offside flag stayed down, but Damus had his shot saved by Jaye.
Greenville’s most dangerous opportunity came in the 57th minute when a corner kick found Evan Lee, who forced Carlos Avilez into a double save to keep the score level.
Arturo Rodriguez and Damus combined in the 93rd minute, but Arturo was not able to get a shot on goal.
- South Georgia Tormenta FC, the team in second place in USL League One, lost to Forward Madison FC 2-1 at home on Saturday, which means that NTSC extends its lead in the standings.
- This was the third game in a row that Cristian Colman has started for NTSC. He has not yet gotten himself on the score sheet.
- This snaps a run of four matches in a row in which Ronaldo Damus scored a goal.
The next game for North Texas SC will be away against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 6:00 PM CT.
