And if you’re looking for an opponent to welcome Dallas back home, last-place Sporting Kansas City certainly looks appealing for the homecoming. Sporting enters the weekend having lost five of its last six matches, including a 3-0 home loss to Vancouver last Saturday. The skid has left SKC at the bottom of the Western Conference and overall MLS standings, and has the midwestern side looking toward 2027 rather than dreaming about a late playoff charge. But let’s not confuse *last place* with *same old Sporting.* Sporting has aggressively rebuilt its roster during the summer window, adding several new pieces while moving on from some established names. That makes Saturday’s test for Dallas an interesting one. After spending nearly three months away from Toyota Stadium, the expectation should absolutely be three points, but the opponent arriving in Frisco is still figuring out exactly what it wants to become. [Get our posts in your inbox ->](#/portal/signup/free) ## **Tactic Style & Shape**: Under Raphael Wicky, Sporting has generally tried to play more proactively than its record might suggest. SKC wants to build through the midfield rather than simply bypass it, push numbers into advanced areas and press aggressively when possession changes hands. The problem has been turning those ideas into consistent performances. Sporting will put together good stretches without producing enough at either end to actually win matches. - Offensive tendencies - There is a reason why Sporting went out and broke the bank for Andre Luiz this summer, their attacking in 2026 has been utterly disastrous at times, or at least non-existent. - Defensive shape - The growing pains remain obvious. Defenders Emir Karin, Moises Mosquera and Or Blorian are all new to the back line and haven’t had much time together. Last week against Vancouver, the Caps exploited that ruthlessly. Dallas should look to move them around rather than allowing Sporting’s new defensive group to settle into a comfortable shape. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/9b/a4/9ba413bd-9ade-4977-b9cf-1a1e2ef6de5c/content/images/2026/09/image.png) ## **Key Player: Andre Luiz** Despite only just arriving in the last couple of weeks, he is the obvious one to point out given what Sporting spent to land him. Luiz arrived from Olympiacos in a club-record transfer and immediately becomes one of the central pieces for SKC’s rebuild. The 24-year old Brazilian is capable of playing across the attacking line and brings what Wicky’s attack has lacked all season long: someone who can create his own opportunities. ## **Key Matchup: Petar Musa vs Moises Mosquera** All eyes are going to be on Musa down the stretch, and for good reason. Musa enters the weekend two goals behind Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race and two away from matching FC Dallas’ single-season scoring record…a mark he already tied once in 2024\. This matchup with Sporting newcomer Moises Mosquera will be one to watch. Mosquera joined SKC this summer from FC Juarez and gives their rebuilt back line a physical, athletic presence in central defense. He gives SKC some size to compete with Musa in the air. They’ve also gone 12-20-5 in regular season meetings in North Texas. **Current form**: We touched on this earlier in the preview, but Sporting has lost five of their last six games, with the lone draw coming against their rivals St. Louis CITY SC a couple of weeks ago. **Where they're at in the standings**: Dead last. [Become a Member ](#/portal/signup) ## **Three keys for FC Dallas** 1. **Treat this as a must-win game:** Dallas just survived a nine-game road trip. Now you’re home, facing the worst team in MLS who has lost five of their last six. Enough qualifiers, just win the damn game. Dallas cannot come out flat in this one in front of the home crowd and allow a team like Sporting any sort of momentum. Take control early, get the crowd behind you and make SKC feel like a road team. 2. **Attack the new-look defense:** SKC has been leaky all season in defense and their new group in the back has continued that trait a bit as they get comfortable with one another. Dallas needs to keep the ball moving like what Vancouver did last week. Switch the play quickly, forcing their defense to make decisions about handing off runners. The more Dallas can communicate and adjust, the better chance they will have at breaking them down. 3. **Don’t let their new guys find confidence:** This can be the danger of playing a bad team with a slew of new guys. Guys like Luiz, Mosquera and Maric won’t care that SKC has been largely terrible this season. They weren’t there for the truly terrible runs of the season.
