After 33 matches, countless road trips, and a few (too many) wild finishes, FC Dallas has finally reached Decision Day.

FC Dallas closes out the regular season on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium against the Colorado Rapids, with both teams facing different stakes heading into the final weekend.

For Dallas, the playoffs have already been secured with Eric Quill’s side looking to lock up second place with either a win or a draw.

Colorado, meanwhile, is fighting just to get into the playoffs. The Rapids currently sit in the 9th and final spot and are battling five other teams for the remaining three playoff spots in the Western Conference.

One team is looking to build momentum, while the other is looking to survive and see additional soccer in November.

Let’s dive in.

## **Tactic Style & Shape**:

Under first-year manager Matt Wells, Colorado has attempted to establish a more proactive identity built around possession, pressing and controlling the tempo of matches

The Rapids tend to operate out of a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 shape, with emphasis on building through he midfield and creating opportunities for their attacking players to operate between the lines.

The Rapids want to press opponents into mistakes and use those turnovers to create opportunities before defenses can recover.

That approach has been difficult to maintain for Colorado.

The Rapids have struggled defensively when opponents bypass its initial pressure particularly when the Rapids commit additional numbers forward and leave space behind the midfield.

Dallas will want to expose that space when those moments happen, but also continue to press up the field like we’ve seen in recent weeks to force turnovers early.

## **Key Player: Paxten Aaronson**

The Rapids were one of the busier teams during the summer transfer window but the fact remains, Aaronson is their key guy that holds it all together.

The American midfielder enters Saturday’s game with eight goals and eight assists on the season. But his importance goes beyond his numbers.

Aaronson is comfortable receiving possession in tight spaces, turning toward goal and immediately looking for opportunities to advance the attack.

## **Key Matchup: Shaq Moore vs Morgan Whittaker**

This could be one of the more interesting individual battles on Saturday night.

Dallas saw what life was like without Moore last weekend in Kansas City. He’ll be going up against a newcomer to MLS in Morgan Whittaker. The English winger has five goals in nine league appearances, including three in his last three matches.

Moore will need to remain disciplined whenever the two meet on Dallas’ defensive end, especially when Colorado looks to isolate Whittaker in one-on-one situations.

## Quick Notes:

**All-time vs Dallas**: The Rapids are 30-37-10 in all-time regular season matches with FC Dallas, and they have a 9-27-8 record in North Texas. Their last win came back in 2024\.

**Current form**: They’re 2-2-6 in their last ten, with the most recent win coming against Vancouver a couple of weeks ago at home.

**Where they're at in the standings**: The Rapids are hanging on for dear life in the playoff race. They’re currently in 9th place with 43 points. They are currently tied on points with Portland and Seattle, but hold a tiebreaker at the moment with Seattle for that ninth spot.

## **Three keys for FC Dallas**

1. **Don’t let Colorado’s playmakers settle in:** Despite sitting in 9th, the Rapids do have some attacking talent that can control games. Aaronson and Whittaker are a dangerous combination and Dallas has to find ways to limit their rhythm from establishing early, especially when they move the ball through the midfield.
2. **Take advantage of the Rapids’ road struggles:** They have two wins in 16 road games this season, don’t give them a shot at a third. Dallas needs to press the Rapids when they look to build out of the back, force turnovers and move quickly when opportunities appear.
3. **Finish second and build toward the playoffs:** Dallas has had a playoff spot for a couple of weeks now, but they haven’t exactly looked the part since clinching. This needs to be a game where they re-establish their form and build some confidence going into the playoffs. They have home-field locked up for the first round, but a win on Saturday will secure potential for an additional round (or two depending on how things go).
