There is extending the three-game winning streak to four games. There’s the playoff race, which FC Dallas is in contention for a home playoff game or two. Then there’s the fact that it’s Austin FC coming to town with a chance to lock up Copa Tejas with a result. Dallas enters the penultimate Copa Tejas match of the season with a chance to clinch the state crown for 2026 with a win or a draw. Dallas currently sit atop the Copa Tejas standings with six points after two games, while Austin and Houston have three points apiece (and have played one more game each than Dallas). Naturally, Austin isn’t exactly limping into Toyota Stadium. Since Dallas left Q2 Stadium last month with a 2-1 victory, Austin has gone unbeaten in their last six MLS matches. The Verde have picked up big road wins, including hitting the trifecta in Cascadia by downing the Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps in their own buildings. This one is shaping up to be a good one, so let’s dive into Austin and see how Dallas can continue their own hot streak and claim Copa Tejas in the process. [Get our posts in your inbox ->](#/portal/signup/free) ## **Tactic Style & Shape**: The biggest chance in the last month for interim manager Davy Arnaud’s squad is that they’ve looked much more comfortable playing without needing to control every part of the match. Austin is willing to defend in a compact shape, concede stretches of possession and then attack quickly when an opportunity presents itself. Their win over the weekend in Vancouver is a good example of that. Their opening goal came from a counter-attack, while the game-winner came through a long ball before the Whitecaps could reset defensively. He’s become increasingly more important to Austin’s attack as their primary connector. He provides the quality that turns a routine transition into an actual scoring opportunity - something that was lacking for the Verde earlier this season. What could determine this matchup may actually be how Musa works off of the ball in this one. That could be where Dallas tests Austin in this game by making Svatok constantly decide whether to follow Musa when he drops away from the back line or hold his position and risk giving the Croatian room to receive the ball. Then Dallas can get guys like Joaquin Valiente and Logan Farrington involved to further complicate those decisions for Svatok. ## **Availability Report**[**1**](#footnote-1)**:** Suspended: none Out: Myrto Uzuni (lower body) Questionable: none International duty: none ## Quick Notes: **All-time at FC Dallas**: The Verde are searching for its first win in Frisco, as they’ve gone 6-0-1 in seven all-time regular season matches at Toyota Stadium. **Current form**: Since FC Dallas downed them back in August, Austin has gone six games unbeaten with a 3-0-3 record. **Where they're at in the standings**: The improved form has Austin sitting 13th in the standings, but a remarkable one point away from the 9th and final playoff spot. ## **Three keys for FC Dallas** 1. **Don’t give Austin the counter**: Austin is very comfortable allowing Dallas to have the ball and if Dallas gets careless with it, they’ll pounce. Dallas will need the midfield to be on top of things and kill off any transitions quality. Make Austin build their attacks, don’t gift them a track meet. 2. **Make them defend Musa:** We all know what Musa is chasing here with this game. There is the Golden Boot and the club’s all-time regular season mark. He’s got four goals against Austin in six previous games against the Verde. In other words, make Austin uncomfortable by getting Musa involved in the attack early and often. This will also mean secondary runners could have a field day if they overcommit on Musa. 3. **Lock up Copa Tejas:** There isn’t too much to this one. Dallas controls its own destiny in a lot of ways, including Copa Tejas. We know Eric Quill isn’t going to play for the draw, so why not go for it early and let the fans have something to celebrate long into the September night.
