FC Dallas kicked off things quickly with a goal in the second minute of the match from Andres Ricarute. Ryan Hollingshead got forward on the play and found himself behind the Timbers’ defense with the ball. The veteran found the run of Ricaurte who slotted home an easy finish past the Portland keeper.
Dallas doubled their lead ten minutes later on a picture-perfect ball from Phelipe over the Timbers defense to the run of Jader Obrien, who calmly chipped the Portland keeper for his first goal in MLS.
The third goal came right before the halftime whistle as Bressan hammered home a missed shot from Jose Martinez off a corner kick.
The Timbers made four changes at halftime to get back into this game and two of their subs contributed to their first goal in the 62nd minute as Diego Valeri and Erik Williamson linked up in the Dallas penalty box on a clever one-two combo that Williamson slotted past Phelipe.
Dallas put the game on in the 85th minute on a breakaway that Franco Jara got the ball around one Portland defender to the run of Dante Sealy, who scored his first professional goal.
Instant Reaction: This was more like it, am I right? Between the starting formation going back to a 4-3-3, the attack finding its way moments into the match, and then three more times after that. This was a refreshing change of pace after the first two weeks that were just rather dreadful in front of goal.
Portland did press well in the second half once they made their line-change of subs after the break. That was a good test for this backline that had some dicey moments at times but they showed well enough to limit those chances and keep Portland to only a goal.
Man of the Match: You can make a case for a couple of guys from Ricarute to Hollingshead to even someone like Acosta who was super active in the midfield throughout this one. Or you could go the fan route and take a player who scored like Obrien.
What’s next for FC Dallas: Things continue to turn up here as FC Dallas will remain at home for next week’s first round of the Texas Derby against the Houston Dynamo.
