FC Dallas stumbles in 1-0 loss to Atlanta United

A VAR penalty is what decides this one. Ugh.

A video review decision on a Jeff Larentowicz penalty was the difference maker in a 1-0 loss by FC Dallas on Wednesday night to Atlanta United. The loss snapped FC Dallas’ win streak at three games, while Atlanta earned their first win in six.

The two side struggled to get any quality chances on goal in the first half but shortly after the second half began, United pressed forward and forced an unfortunate situation on the Dallas defense in the 56th minute. A ball bounced off the arm of Matt Hedges and was cleared out but the video assistant reviewed the play and called a penalty that Larentowicz scored.

Dallas was outplayed by Atlanta on the night as Luchi Gonzalez opted to rest some starters. Atlanta outshot Dallas 12-6 with the Hoops only earning one shot on goal.

Atlanta nearly iced the game late on, only for Eric Remedi to be denied by a last-ditch block from Hedges.

Instant reaction: Yes, this kind of result is frustrating to watch as the attack never really got going with Jesus Ferreira up top to start out. The Homegrown forward looked out of sorts in his first game after not playing in the last three. But it wasn’t just him that looked off on the night, the entire squad lacked a bite going forward. It would have been fine to get a draw in this one, which the lineup and rest for some key guys made it feel like that was what they were going for here. As fellow Big D Soccer writer Nathan Hill pointed out, pull a Ted Lasso and be a goldfish after this one.

Man of the match: I felt at times Fafa Picault had some good energy out on the pitch this evening, so we’ll give it to him. Outside of that it was a pretty ho-hum night all around.

What’s next for FC Dallas: The boys return home this weekend for a clash with their off boss Oscar Pareja and Orlando City.
