FC Dallas struggles in return to play in a 1-0 loss to Nashville SC

David Accam scores a late goal to give the expansion side their first win.

After five months of no soccer for both FC Dallas and Nashville SC, the two side struggled for the majority of the game to get anything going. But it was the expansion side from Tennessee that pulled through with a late David Accam goal to secure their first three points in MLS.

Accam came off the bench late in the game for the visitors and in the 85th minute he made his efforts count as he dribbled through a tired Dallas defense before firing a shot that would bounce just right past keeper Jimmy Maurer.

Both sides struggled to get anything creative going forward in the first half. Dallas was able to get a little more going in the second half as Luchi Gonzalez utilized his bench with the five available subs. Bringing Paxton Pomykal, Ricardo Pepi and Zdenek Ondrasek on, the home side was able to press a little higher and create more chances.

The best may have come in 81st minute on a volley from Reggie Cannon inside the penalty box. Michael Barrios found Cannon behind a Nashville defender but the angle on the shot was a tough one and keeper Joe Willis made the stop to keep it level.

Instant reaction: The first half really lacked all the energy from both sides. I guess that is what you can expect when both teams haven’t played a true game in five months and it was in the mid-90s around kickoff. The second half was a lot more energetic from both sides, especially once the subs came on. Dallas had a lot more momentum and pace to them in the attack once Pomykal came on. If he isn’t 90 minutes fit, at least getting 30 minutes tonight was good.

Like we saw all throughout the Orlando tournament, it is how you finish games that is important right now. Dallas just took the foot off the pedal enough at the wrong moment and Nashville to their credit, made it count. The speed of Accam really caused some issues for a backline that does struggle against speed.

Man of the match: Eh...pass.

What’s next for FC Dallas: We’re back at it again with Nashville on Sunday. Same time. Same place. Probably same crazy hot weather.
