FC Dallas eliminated from MLS Cup Playoffs following a 1-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders

An early goal in the second half was too much to overcome for Luchi Gang.

The 2020 season as wild as it has been has now come to a close for FC Dallas following a 1-0 loss on Tuesday night to the Seattle Sounders.

Seattle got a goal in the 49th minute off a header from Shane O’Neill to help the defending champions advance to the Western Conference finals next week where they will take on the winner of Wednesday night’s game between Sporting Kansas City and Minnesota United.

FC Dallas nearly equalized in the 63rd minute on two big chances. Michael Barrios first fired a Ryan Hollingshead cross from the left flank off the post, only for Yeimar Gomez Andrade to provide a goal-line clearance on Andres Ricaurte’s follow-up effort.

Other than the goal-line clearance, Dallas struggled to create anything of note in front of goal, as Stefan Frei didn’t have to make a single save on the night.

Instant Reaction: It certainly is a bummer to see the team exit yet again to Seattle. The Sounders weren’t exactly the better team on the night by any big margin but they did make the most of their chances when they had them and that is something Dallas has really struggled at doing away from home this year. Luchi Gonzalez mentioned in his post-game press conference at how this one hurts a bit more than last year and I can totally see where he is coming from.

Man of the Match: It can be tough to pick out a player in a losing effort but Ricaurte had some solid moments, as did Matt Hedges who appeared in his 299th game for FC Dallas (across all competitions).

What’s next for FC Dallas: It is the end of a wild year. On to 2021.
