FC Dallas may be set to take advantage of the reported MLS U22 Initiative (Clavijo Rule?). There are multiple reports out of Hungary, from 444 HU and Nemzeti Sport, that say FC Dallas is set to sign Szabolcs Schön from MTK Budapest (Hungarian top flight).
The reports are very specific in their details, Szabols will join FC Dallas in May (MLS Primary transfer window is from February 10 to May 4), upon completion of MTK Budapest’s season, which sees his current club in the midst of trying to earn a birth in the Europa League. FC Dallas is said to have agreed to pay €1.2 million Euros ($1.46 million) if incentives are met, and the player has agreed to a three year deal.
Schön turned 20 years old this last September and is a left wing player capable of playing on both wings. Szabolcs was signed in 2019 by MTK Budapest, arriving on a free transfer from the Ajax U19s, where he had played in 37 matches. He started 2019 with MTK Budapest playing in Division 2, where he played in 17 matches (15 starts, four goals, six assists), helping the team earn promotion to Division 1. Szabolcs has played 31 matches in the top flight and the Hungarian Cup (eight goals, two assists) for an MTK Budapest club that sits in 4th place.
Currently a Hungarian U21 (4 appearances), Szabolcs has extensive experience playing in the Hungarian youth system, with 47 appearances from the Hungarian U16s to the U19s.
Some may think that this looks like a North Texas SC signing, mainly due to FC Dallas not having any International spots, but that $1.46 million price tag says otherwise. This is very much a player that could add instant quality to a very thin winger rotation. You have to think that FC Dallas has the ability to acquire an International spot by May, be it by a current player earning his citizenship, or by trading for another one.
Remember that FC Dallas has an open Young DP spot (plus the pending U22 Initiative), plenty of openings on the roster, an influx of allocation money from recent player sales, and that Szabolcs fits an area of need. Not to mention that he fits the criteria for a typical FC Dallas signing (young, fast, doesn’t break the bank, with ton of potential), so this rumor certainly has some real smoke behind it.
What do you think of the potential signing? Is he an FC Dallas signing, or a North Texas SC signing? Let us know your thoughts!
