We’re inching closer to the holidays here and there is a new FC Dallas rumor to unwrap here as an early Christmas present.
Marca.com is reporting that FC Dallas is interested in Giorgi Papunashvili, Grada3.com is reporting the same story:
Papu is a left footed winger who can play anywhere in the attacking third. The 24-year old has 14 caps with the Georgian National Team.
Papu is in his third season with Real Zaragoza (Spain Division 2). He played in 31 matches his first season, scoring eight goals with two assists. His second season was cut short by injury as he only saw action in 14 matches, finishing the season with three goals and one assist. This season Papu has played in only 12 matches, starting just two, with his most recent start coming this past Tuesday, where he scored his lone goal of the season in a 1-0 victory.
Papu has been used mostly as a ‘super sub’ by Real Zaragoza in the past two seasons, starting only nine matches. Not surprisingly, he wants more playing time, and is willing to move.
Despite his young age, he has a ton of professional experience, playing 64 matches with Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia Division 1), 20 matches with Werder Bremen II (Germany Division 3), and 51 matches with Real Zaragoza. The fact he has been mostly a super sub, fits the profile of the type of players that FC Dallas has a history of pursuing, players such as Maxi Urruti, Cristian Colman, and Santiago Mosquera come to mind. This is a very realistic target for FC Dallas that would likely be a TAM player with a big upside, in an area of need.
Here are some highlights from his first season at Real Zaragoza:
Papu was also linked with NYCFC, just two months ago.
What do you think? Is this the kind of player that FC Dallas should be bringing in? Would a player like this be a depth piece, or a starter? Let us know your thoughts.
