A report out of Germany says that Angelo Mayer will join FC Dallas next week on trial:
The 21-year old is a 5 foot 7 inch, technically savvy left back with speed, who was the 2nd choice left back for Bayern Munich II (German 4th division) last season, and saw action in 16 matches (seven starts).
Angelo is a former Germany U19 player, with tons of international experience at the youth level. Angelo came up through the TSV 1860 Munich academy, and featured for TSV 1860 II (German 4th division) before joining Bayern Munich II last year.
Angelo is set to be the third choice left back for Bayern Munich II (following the addition of Jonathan Meier) this upcoming season. Angelo has seen his development stalled by a slew of injuries, that have seen him miss long stretches of playing time in the past couple of years.
At 21-years of age, Angelo is now too old to be considered a prospect within the Bayern Munich development system. That is not the case in MLS, as he is the average age of an MLS Super Draft pick. FC Dallas needs defensive depth, and adding a young development level (by MLS standards) player, with a strong amatuer pedigree, could be the way to go.
If FC Dallas having first choice of players that have stalled within the Bayern Munich development system, is just one of the ways this partnership will work, then i think this partnership will be a huge boon for FC Dallas.
