FC Dallas is negotiation to transfer standout midfielder Mauro Diaz to a club in the Middle East, a league source tells The Athletic. The 27-year-old Argentine was left off the team’s roster for Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls and its U.S. Open Cup round of 16 loss to Sporting Kansas City on June 16th. He was also not at training on Wednesday. FC Dallas has four players listed on the league’s injury report but Diaz is not one of them.
The transfer is not yet finalized and international deals often have multiple moving parts, meaning any agreement to sell Diaz could still fall apart in the late stages, however Diaz recently completed his exit physical with the team, the source said.
FC Dallas did not comment on the story. There were reports earlier this morning that said Diaz was not in training again today.
For those who follow FC Dallas closely, you know that Diaz has been in and out of the lineup a lot this season as Oscar Pareja continues to tinker with his lineups.
Diaz joined FC Dallas midway through the 2013 season on a transfer from River Plate in Argentina. He has totaled 23 goals and 44 assists over five seasons, playing in 109 games with 84 starts. He added another five assists in six career playoff games.
As the Athletic’s report states above, nothing is final here but it appears that Diaz is on his way out of Dallas. How FC Dallas moves forward from this is going to be an interesting thing to keep tabs on this summer.
