FC Dallas has made a lot of work this offseason in signing Homegrown talent. From Paxton Pomykal earlier in the year to Bryan Reynolds, the team has added a lot of young players to the roster.
One that won’t be coming is center back Hector Montalvo, who announced via Twitter yesterday that he was signing with Mexican side Tigres UNAL.
Montalvo just wrapped up his freshman season under former FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman at Grand Canyon University. He recently picked up NSCAA All-West Region team honors as well as ones from TopDrawerSoccer (Freshman First Team) and the WAC (Second Team All-Conference).
Montalvo started and played in 18 matches and was their top center back during the season.
How did FC Dallas miss out on him? At this point, given how successful the U-16s and U-18s have been over the last two years, it was bound to happen that the club would lose out on a couple players here and there. We already saw the club lose out on Weston McKennie earlier in the year to German side Schalke.
It is also highly likely that Montalvo wasn’t going to be in the club’s plans for 2017 in terms of a HGP deal either. He would have been deeper in the depth charts, which likely caused him to go with the offer that Tigres presented him.
