Proposed 2023 Roster and Salary Budget

Below is a proposed 2023 Roster with the Salary Budget included. This is my attempt with publicly available information to construct a roster that should be compliant with the 2023 Salary Budget restrictions. Since we don't know what the limits will be for 2023 yet, I'm using 2022 Salary Budget limits and salaries as a base for estimation. This should be close enough to get a fairly accurate estimate. Explanations of the table are given below.

The 2022 Salary column is the 2022 Guaranteed Salary for each player. The 2023 Senior Roster column is the budget hit each Senior Roster player will have on the 2023 Salary Budget. GAM Transactions are the known, anticipated or projected payments/receipts attached to various player or team transactions. The Supplemental Roster are off-budget players that don't impact a teams salary budget compliance.

Bolded players occupy an international slot. Italicized players are on loan. Italicized salaries are renegotiated or new contract salary amounts.

Total Allowable Salary Budget is each team's alloted Base Salary Budget ($4,900,000) plus allotted TAM ($2,800,000 in 2022) plus allotted GAM ($1,625,000). It's the actual budget number teams have to comply with.

So, to start, I'm buying out Jara's contract even though the probability of this happening is low. I'm passing on Nanu, Quinonez, El Medkhar, Roberts, Munjoma, and Bartlett. I'm loaning out Quignon to Argentina for $400K which i can turn into GAM per league rules.

I'm taking that GAM plus the $1.1M in GAM i will receive from the sale of Richards to Crystal Palace and then subtract the $800K i owe DC United and New England for Arriola and Lletget. That leaves me with $700K i can use to increase my salary budget (shown as a negative value in the table since it reduces the total salary cost).

I'm guessing that Lletget's renegotiated contract will come in around $700K/yr and that Edwin will get a new contract for at least $350K (he's worth that at a minimum). I'm also guessing that Dallas will offer and Hedges will eventually accept an offer around $700K for one year and then another option year. Personally, i believe Dallas would be better off letting him walk and making his $900K available to be used in any way, but it's hard for me to imagine that they will let a club legend just walk away.

With all of that out of the way, i can afford at least two starting level players that will be improvements over the current starters. I would use the freed up DP slot on a #6 and the TAM player on a younger, more athletic CB. Or you could use the TAM spot to get a high value FB and have enough money left to spend on a decent backup #9. I would bring in at least one MLS veteran (FB or CB) and one U22 player. Because I'm only retaining 5 internationals i have 3 open international slots to use on the DP, TAM guy and U22 guy.

To compete for an MLS Cup Dallas has to improve its starting eleven. The front 5 are quite good so no improvements are needed there. The back five, however, are really average at best and they are holding the offense back by needing protection. A DP #6 and younger, more athletic CB can really raise the quality of the team to where they can legitimately contend for an MLS Cup.
