Hoops Home & Abroad: Reggie Cannon impresses in Boavista FC debut

Reggie made his debut in Portugal, while another FC Dallas player also made the move to Europe.

Welcome back to our coverage of players with connections to FC Dallas, the FCD Academy, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Reggie Cannon debuts for Boavista FC, while Kobra lands in the Czech Republic. While those two players were joining their new teams, there were other players making their starting debuts with their new clubs.

Europe

Weston McKennie (AP - Juventus/Serie A): Weston continues to train with Juventus, as we anxiously await the start of the Serie A season:

Reggie Cannon (AP/FCD - Boavista FC/Liga NOS): Reggie finally joined his new club in Portugal, and after only a couple of days there got the start in the teams final preseason club friendly. It didn’t take long for Reggie to impress his new team:

Reggie scored the first goal of a match that Boavista FC would dominate on the way to a 4-1 victory. Reggie’s new team already looks impressive and the team is still adding talent, so this has the potential to be a fun year for Boavista FC fans.

Christian Cappis (AP - Hobro IK/Danish Superliga): Christian has left Denmark with an expired work permit. While he has returned to the states, Hobro IK is carrying on like nothing has happened. The club say they expect him back and blame his agent for stirring up drama between player and club. This aint over folks.

Carlos Gruezo (FCD - FC Augsburg/Bundesliga): Gruezo started in DFB Pokal (German Cup) action against Eintracht Celle (German 5th Division). Gruezo had a good game against a clearly overmatched opponent, and FC Augsburg would win by a 7-0 score.

Chris Richards (AP/FCD - Bayern Munich II/3. Liga): Richards is still practicing with the senior team. Carlos Gonzalez (CBS Sports) is reporting that multiple teams from multiple countries, have shown interest in Richards:

Zdenek Ondrasek (FCD - Viktoria Plzen/Czech First League): Kobra was officially announced as Viktoria Plzen’s newest signing:

Rumor is that the transfer fee was right around $1 million, which if true, would be the biggest transfer fee has ever payed for a player above the age of 30. This is an unusual move for Viktoria Plzen, who’s signings tend to be youth driven. The big change comes in the face of the team’s involvement in the UEFA Europa League Qualification rounds, where the team is looking for scoring punch, leadership, and quite a bit of fire. Luckily for them, Kobra brings all three to the table and he brings the fire in spades.

Getterson (FCD- Maritimo/Liga NOS): Maritimo continues its preseason preperations.

Ramiro Funes Mori (DFW-Villarreal CF/La Liga): Ramiro has returned to practice but is not yet fully fit. Ramiro was not in the game day line up for opening weekend.

Johan Gomez (AP - Porto B) - Johan was an unused sub in Porto B’s 1-0 loss at Varzim.

Anton Nedyalkov (FCD - Ludogorets/Bulgaria): Nedyalkov started for Ludogorets in a battle for league supremacy against visiting Lokomitiv Plovdiv. Nedyalkov played the full match, and Ludogorets won the week five encounter by a score of 3-1, that sees the club vault to the top spot on the First League Table.

Nicholas Hagen (AP - Sabail FC) : Nick made his Sabail FC debut against 2nd place Zira IK. Sabail FC would go on to lose by a 2-1 score, with one of the goals scored on Nick coming off a PK. Even with the loss, Nick looked solid in goal, and his distribution from the back was on point for a team that was simply outmatched from whistle to whistle:

Anibal Chala (FCD - Dijon/Ligue 1): Anibal Chala got his first start in Ligue 1 against Brest. Dijon was already short handed for this encounter, having to replace four starters on the line up in the lead up to this match. Things only got worse once the club found itself down to 10 men in the 55th minute. Chala played the duration of the match, and Dijon would lose by a final score of 2-0.

Despite the loss, it was a solid showing for Chala who ended with a match high four tackles.

Mexico & Central America

Rogelio Funes Mori (DFW-Monterrey/Liga MX): Rogelio started and played the full match in a 1-1 draw at Pachuca. The draw sees Monterrey currently 7th place in the Liga MX Table.

Fabian Castillo (FCD - Tijuana) - Fabian started and played 78 minutes in a 2-1 loss against 2nd place Cruz Azul. The loss sees the Xolos drop to 15th place in the Liga MX Table.

Alejandro Zendejas (AP - Necaxa FC/Liga MX): I somehow forgot to include Alex in last weeks coverage, which is a sad shame, as Alex scored in 2-1 loss at San Luis:

Alex was rewarded for his fine performance by getting his second consecutive start for Necaxa. Zendejas played the full match against his former club, Chivas de Guadalajara. Alex’s team found themselves down to 10 men just 40 minutes in, and it took a goal at the death by Chivas, to seal a 2-1 defeat.

The loss drops Necaxa to dead last in the Liga MX Table.

Mauro Diaz (FCD - Estudiantes de la Plata/Argentina) - Currently in the start of the 5th week of preseason training.

Cristian Colman (FCD - Barcelona SC/Ecuador) - Colman started up top for Barcelona in a battle for 3rd place. Colman played the entire match, and Barcelona SC defeated Universidad Catolica 1-0 to claim sole possession of 3rd place in the Liga Pro Table, just one point behind the league leaders.

Major League Soccer

Walker Zimmerman (FCD), Dax McCarty (FCD) & Dominique Badji (FCD - Nashville SC) vs. Emerson Hyndman (DFW - Atlanta United): Emerson was an unused sub for struggling Atlanta United. Walker, Dax, and Badji all started for surprising Nashville SC, who romped all over Atlanta United for a 4-2 victory. Badji was involved in the first two goals, while Dax McCarthy was involved in all four goals:

Tesho Akindele (FCD - Orlando City SC) vs. Brek Shea (FCD), & Victor Ulloa (FCD/AP - Inter Miami): Tesho saw one minute of action at the end of the match. Victor started and played the first half only. Brek came on to start the second half with his team trailing 1-0, and quickly altered the direction of the match:

Inter Miami would go on to earn a 2-1 victory.

Keaton Parks (DFW - New York City FC) - Parks started and played 69 minutes in a 0-0 draw at DC United.

Lee Nguyen (DFW - New England Revolution): Lee was traded to the Revolution midweek, and was on the bench at the Philadelphia Union. Lee would make his Revolution debut in the 78th minute of a 2-1 loss.

Kellyn Acosta (AP/FCD - Colorado Rapids): Acosta started and played 78 minutes in a 5-0 thrashing of Real Salt Lake.

Maynor Figueroa (FCD-Houston Dynamo): Figueroa started and played the full match in the Texas Derby loss against FC Dallas.

Omar Gonzalez (DFW - Toronto FC): Gonzalez started in a 2-1 victory at the Montreal Impact.

Maxi Urruti (FCD - Montreal Impact): Urruti is recovering from a knock on one of his knees and did not feature for Montreal two weeks running.

Jacori Hayes (FCD - Minnesota United): Jacori started and played 78 minutes in a 1-0 loss at Sporting Kansas City.

USL Championship & USL League One

Aaron Guillen (FCD/AP - Tampa Bay Rowdies): Aaron started in a 1-0 loss at the Charleston Battery. Only the second loss of the season for the Rowdies, who own the top ranked defense in the Championship.

Attiba Harris (FCD - OKC Energy FC): Attiba was back in the starting line up for OKC Energy, and wearing the captian’s band. Attiba’s leadership was badly needed, as the team went down to 10 men in the 78th minute. Despite being down a man, the team held on for a 1-1 draw at Tulsa FC.

Jonathan Gomez (FCD - Louisville City FC): Just was a late sub, coming on in the 86th minute of a 3-0 victory over visiting Saint Louis FC.

Connor Presly (AP - New England Revolution II) - Connor started against Chattanooga Red Wolves. He handled corner kicks for his team, and got the assist on this goal

It wouldn’t be enough, as Revs II would lose 2-1 against the 2nd place team.
