Workhorse of the Week vs Minnesota and Houston

FC Dallas had an up and down week with plenty of solid performances as the team builds toward a potential playoff spot. Which player did enough to earn Workhorse of the Week?

Congratulations to John Nelson, one of the cool stories of the season as he earns minutes at left back and also earned love from voters last week for his performances.

Down Then Up

FC Dallas rode into town to face Minnesota United last Wednesday evening and unfortunately started the game on the wrong foot, looking disorganized and disjointed. However, second half adjustments put them back into the game, and really, though the game was hardly their best, they played well enough to come away with something. I still have my hesitation on the PK call on Ryan Hollingshead. Where is VAR when you need it?

Back home, Dallas managed to handle the Houston Dynamo fairly easily, ensuring that the cannon stays home in Frisco. Andres Ricaurte followed up his promising debut in the game before with a solid performance and a scintillating goal. Jara secured the win off of a classy finish. Very strong performance against a surging Houston team.

All in all, this was a week where the Dallas side finally began to figure things out, despite dealing with injuries and imperfect performances.

Who stood out?

Of the guys who went the full 90, we have several to consider this week.

Bressan deserves love for his performance in Minnesota and his continued emergence as the heir to Reto. In the words of Jose Carmona, he is becoming more than just veteran defensive depth. Could he win a starting spot at some point?

Reto Ziegler went 180 minutes across both matches and is absolutely crucial as a leader and calming presence, especially when they were playing without Hedges.

Ryan Hollingshead rebounded after a tough match in Minnesota and looked a lot better at home, and Matt Hedges returned to the pitch. He was a little shaky, but the team looks better when he is back there.

The other names to consider include Michael Barrios, Thiago Santos, and Franco Jara, all putting in very solid shifts and contributing to keeping the team in the game at Minnesota and securing three points at home.

Kyle Zobeck also deserves consideration. His play in Minnesota was not great, but he improved. Against Houston, the only goal he gave up was a killer free kick that he could do little about. Good to see him emerge and grow in confidence.

Finally, I’m personally going with Bryan Reynolds this week. The kid went 180 minutes, and he looks the part. I think he has room to grow, which should be terrifying for upcoming opponents, but the kid is legit.
