Rumor: FC Dallas acquires goalkeeper Phelipe Melgiolaro on loan

FC Dallas looks to have acquired Brazil U23 Keeper on loan from Gremio.

After the termination of goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez’s contract and Homegrown Carlos Avilez being loaned out to North Texas SC, FC Dallas appears to be in the market for a new keeper to fill that hole.

A new report out of Brazil on Friday suggests that FC Dallas has acquired a player to compete with new incumbent Jimmy Maurer.

The loan negotiation has been verified by Gremio (Brazilian top flight), who state that the only thing left to do is finalization of the paper work.

Phelipe Magliolaro, or simply Phelipe, 21-year goalkeeper that could be coming to Frisco. He is a keeper with the Brazil U-23s (last appearance was November of 2019), and he also had 12 appearances with the Brazil U-20s where he was the #1 keeper.

Phelipe spent last season as the third choice keeper for Gremio and made his Serie A debut in a 2-1 loss at Fortaleza.

The loan is for the remainder of the 2020 season and has a buy clause of $2.5 million. Phelipe will join former teammate Bressan on the FC Dallas roster. The deal would take effect at the opening of the summer transfer window for MLS, which is next week.

I have to say that this is a very exciting signing and is in line with the youth movement championed by FC Dallas. Phelipe is a player that was getting looks from several MLS teams before FC Dallas stepped in. The team only had two keepers on the main roster and everyone knew that there was no way the team would go into the 2020 season with just two keepers.

What do you think of the loan? With the news of Jesse’s departure, is this the kind of move you expected? Let us know your thoughts!
