Squad Selection: Will a Derby match ignite FC Dallas in 2020?

Two games at home last week didn’t go all that well for FC Dallas, how will they fare in Houston Friday night?

The first edition of the 2020 Texas Derby is here! FC Dallas will charter a flight down to Houston on Friday to battle the Dynamo as they look to keep El Capitan for another year at Toyota Stadium.

Last week against Nashville SC, Luchi Gonzalez used a couple different looks as he was trying to get players minutes after having five months off from action, and to help try new things in general. I would imagine he will look to build the minutes of players like Paxton Pomykal and Franco Jara up more, while finding ways to get Zdenek Ondrasek on the field too.

One thing we do know is that defender Ryan Hollingshead will be out once again this weekend. Gonzalez confirmed to the media on Wednesday afternoon that he and the club had a pre-agreed upon family matter for the veteran defender to attend to here. So we might expect to see another run of John Nelson on the field, or Gonzalez may opt to give Bressan some more minutes in the defense while sliding Reto Ziegler over to the left back spot (something he’s done before).

Here is what we know in terms of availability for Friday’s game (some of the loaned players could end up not being on loan, some of those are fluid each week):

OUT: Ryan Hollingshead (family matter)

LOAN: Francis Atuahene (San Diego Loyal), Pablo Aranguiz (La U), Callum Montgomery (San Antonio FC), Ema Twumasi (Austin Bold)

Note: Andres Ricaurte and Phelipe Megiolaro have yet to arrive with the team. Luchi Gonzalez said they’ll each arrive over the next two weeks and then will go through a quarantine protocol before being able to train with the team.
