Squad Selection: How will FC Dallas look on opening day?

It is a new year, but how much will FC Dallas actually look different?

MLS: Sporting Kansas City at FC Dallas Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The new season is finally upon us here as FC Dallas will take the field on Saturday afternoon as they host the Philadelphia Union.

Luchi Gonzalez enters his second year as manager and he spent part of the preseason working out a new formation (a 3-5-2 look) to go along with his preferred method (4-3-3). The question going into Saturday’s game will be whether or not we see the new look or the one that we grew accustomed to in 2019.

Part of that reason is due to the players potentially missing for this one. We know Brandon Servania and Bryan Acosta are both going to be out for this one with injuries. Newcomer Thiago Santos appears to have won over the #6 role in the lineup, but who will be with Jesus Ferreira in the midfield is the more burning questions. Will it be Edwin Cerrillo, Thomas Roberts, or John Nelson? All three spent some time in that #8-type role this preseason. Same could be said forHomegrown player Tanner Tessmann, but starting him on opening day seems like a long shot.

Aside from that, who will earn the starting left wing spot? Is it going to be Santiago Mosquera or newcomer Fafa Picault? Or does Gonzalez have an ace up his sleeve for that one in the form of someone like Paxton Pomykal?

Here is what we know in terms of availability for Saturday’s game (some of the loaned players could end up not being on loan, those are fluid each week):

OUT: Brandon Servania (knee), Bryan Acosta (appendix)

QUESTIONABLE: Paxton Pomykal (core muscle recovery)

LOAN: Francis Atuahene (San Diego Loyal), Pablo Aranguiz (La U), Callum Montgomery (San Antonio FC)
