After an off season of finding new deals for young players like Jesus Ferreira and Paxton Pomykal, one player has been noticeably missing from those contract extension signings - Reggie Cannon.
A new report from MLSSoccer.com’s Charles Boehm states that FC Dallas president Dan Hunt is still working with the Homegrown defender and his agent on getting a new deal done despite the growing interest in him from clubs overseas.
“We want to offer Reggie the security – this is home for him and we love him. He is a fantastic young man, both on and off the field, he is really special. And at some point you know he may go to Europe. I can’t tell you when that will happen, or he may play his whole career here, you never know. It’s a collaboration with players. You have to work with the player and get them on the path that they want to be on.”
Hunt also stated that he hopes to sign Cannon to a “big deal”, which likely could see him earn more than what his fellow Homegrown teammates are making on their new contracts. Heck, it may make him one of the top earners on the club for all we know.
There has been a lot of back and forth between the two sides these last few months on a new deal. You have to imagine that both sides were waiting a bit to see how the new MLS CBA shook out. Since that is now over and both sides know the parameters of the new deal between the players and the league, it makes sense that the club is ramping up their potential offer on Cannon.
Either way, it does seem like the club is wanting to protect themselves as well here by getting Cannon locked into a larger deal before he heads off to Europe, even if that is this summer. You can’t blame the club for trying to find a way to increase a potential transfer fee too by locking him into a new contract.
What do you all make of Hunt’s recent statement? Do you think Cannon will remain in Dallas this entire season?
