Squad Selection: What kind of lineup does FC Dallas use against Portland?

New, 3 comments

After two weeks of rest, FC Dallas has plenty of healthy options for Sunday’s playoff match.

The playoffs are finally here and after two weeks of rest, FC Dallas is primed and ready to take on the Portland Timbers this Sunday.

Luchi Gonzalez discussed on Tuesday afternoon in his weekly press call that he has been able to do a little more in training than he has for most of the last three months. Also, he mentioned that several players that were banged up towards the end of the regular season like Bryan Acosta, Fafa Picault and Franco Jara should all be available for this weekend’s game.

The big question comes up now, which lineup does he go with against a really solid Timbers team that won MLS is Back earlier this year (remember that?). Dallas has struggled away from home this year on the offensive side of things and will need big games out of Andres Ricaurte, Jesus Ferreira, Michael Barrios, and Jara.

Does Luchi go with something a little more defensive by putting Ryan Hollingshead further up the field on the wings again like we saw in the final road games of the regular season? This would allow John Nelson to get more time on the field. Or does he go with speed in having Picault and Barrios on the wings?

Or does he go crazy on us here and revert back to a 5-3-2 look that looks to put more central defenders on the field (this gets Reto Ziegler back on the pitch with Bressan and Matt Hedges)? I hope this isn’t the route he takes on Sunday but time will certainly tell.

Here is what we know in terms of availability for Sunday’s game:

OUT: Paxton Pomykal (hip)

LOAN: Pablo Aranguiz (La U)
