Defensive issues show up as FC Dallas stumbles to the Chicago Fire 4-0

Four first half goals....yeah four of them were all ugly.

Defensive miscues and errors were the name of the game for FC Dallas on Saturday as they dropped their tenth road game, this time 4-0 to the Chicago Fire.

CJ Sapong scored two goals, while Przemyslaw Frankowski and Nemanja Nikolic added goals of their own as the Fire scored four first half goals.

Chicago took the early lead in the seventh minute on an ugly play out of the back from Reggie Cannon. The United States men’s international defender poorly played the ball back to Matt Hedges as Sapong collected the ball and was able to beat Gonzalez.

The Fire scored two more in the first half thanks to defensive issues again in the back for FC Dallas. Frankowski got on the end of a pass from Brandt Bronico at the far post to double the lead in the 16th minute. Sapong scored his second just before the half hour mark off a corner kick from Nicolas Gaitan. Chicago got their fourth from Nikolic in the 39th minute thanks to some open space in the Dallas defense.

Instant reaction: The miscues and issues in the defense today were pretty ugly to see. Between the opening goal and the three following that, it seemed as though the team just continued to give up more and more space to allow the Fire to do what they wanted. The score line could have been much worse as the Fire hit the post four other times in this game.

On the other end, the attack didn’t seem to have any answers or options. Paxton Pomykal really looked lost at times on the field today as he didn’t provide any spark to the attack. You could say the sub to bring Sanitago Mosquera was about 20 minutes too late too.

Man of the Match: Yeah there really isn’t anyone worth pointing out in this one. Maybe Zdenek Ondrasek for his work rate. Outside of the blunder on the first goal, maybe Hedges? Maybe someone else?

What’s next for FC Dallas: The gang stays on the road for another match next week as they head to Seattle for a Wednesday night showdown with the Sounders.
